Takes bench racing to a whole new level. 
The dork in me thinks this is an awesome concept. Although, it isn't anything new as the DARPA challenge has proved autonomous cars work quite well.
BMW did it on the top gear test track as well.
Pikes Peak? Who here thinks it would be awesome to make an automated car break the 10 minute barrier before a human driven car?

Don't think it'll happen. Our organic meat computer is still a whole E36 M3load smarter than electronic stuff.
