That's actually powered by a similar motor as his old Pike's Peak Celica.
I forget the actual alphabet soup designation, but it's a motor similar to the 3sgte.

I'm not necessarily doubting you, but that doesn't follow standard Toyota naming convention at all.
EDIT: Guess they broke it for this, though near as I can tell it seemed to use the 3S-GTE as a starting point (from an engineering standpoint, that is).

Yep, right on both accounts.
Is there some kind of record for climbing the driveway at Goodwood? Millen seemed like he was trying to beat something, or he really had to pee. I love that guy, regardless of the event, he goes all out.

Apparently, I think, that's to compensate for the thin air at the top of Pikes Peak.
I was at Pikes Peak when Roddy ran the Celica, and also the years he ran the "Tacoma". The first day he showed up with the Tacoma, the rear cover was just black carbon fiber, and the car looked like an IMSA GTP car - which of course is where the engine came from. There was so much talk about it not looking anything at all like a pickup truck that the next day it showed up with Looney Tunes-style farm animals painted on the back, looking over the side. It was hilarious. It was also astoundingly fast. Road and Track ran quarter-mile tests on several race cars several years ago, and Rod brought out the Tacoma, still with Pikes Peak gearing and used R-type tires, i.e. no attempt to install a drag setup, and IIRC (don't have the mag for reference anymore), it ran the quarter in the nines at over 150 mph, topped out before reaching the end of the quarter. If you've ever driven up Pikes Peak, you can imagine that vehicle. It was astounding to watch him run - and Tajima in the Suzuki special was just as awesome.
It's a shame that the road is pretty much paved these days. When it was still all dirt it was an amazing, amazing event.
Is that "Tacoma" a diesel? Because that would explain all the smoke pretty easily.
One of the magazines tested Stig Blomquist's (sp?) Ford RS500 Group B pikes peak car a while back. I think it was EVO. Same thing that happened with the Tacoma, it topped out after around an eighth of a mile. How these guys can use a thousand horsepower on that road, I have no idea.
Marcus Grunholm is running Pikes Peak this year. I'll be out of the country, which is a real shame because I'd love to see that.
