So I bought a swing-away spare tire carrier/rear bumper for the Grand Cherokee. The builder delivered it naked as a newborn baby. I figure bedliner is the best thing to coat it with. So......
Would you use roll on or spray on bedliner?
What brand do you recommend (for or against) based on your experience?
Do I need to prime the bare metal before the bedliner?
Don't get any on your hootus!
Anyway, i used etching primer on the bare spots in my truck bed and covered it all with duplicolor bed armor. It held up remarkablywell to some horrendous abuse, even being put on too thin. I rolled it, and had bought theor sprey gun to redo it shortly before the truck was totalled. I had that thin, E36 M3ty coat in the bed for about 3 years or so of it being parked outside.
Some bedliners can be diret on rust but I think I would POR15 it first on the rust then bedliner over it for best results.
or you grind it down to bare metal, primer then bedliner.
if you want a rough appearance I would get hurculiner or the specific durabak bed liner. Everyone offers a smooth bedliner and I assume they are all pretty similiar. The magic is in type of roller used to give it the rough appearance.
What about a HF powder coating kit and a DIY oven?
I've had bad luck, but it could've been the prep.
Al's Liner, you can get it on Amazon. I used an epoxy primer, then AL's prep spray that came with their product, applied the liner with AL's texture gun.
Very happy, but I think a HF texture gun would work just as good. It also had instructions for rolling it on.
I used Grizzly Grip roll on to recoat a camper top. It worked great and held up a lot better than the plastic top I put it on. It was about the best price of any I found and the customer service and shipping was great. Their web site has instructions for applying to bare metal.

My Jeep interior is done with herculiner. I cleaned and sanded it all down and rolled on the herculiner. Plenty of days last winter it had snow melt and freeze on it. My exhaust got the floor pretty hot in spots. Through all that the liner still looks perfect.

I already have a powder coat setup, but the oven won't fit an entire rear bumper

Hence the DIY oven. Basically some fire bricks and foil to extend it out to fit.
