So, I'm running the Toyo R1-R on the Targa Miata this year. I don't know much about running these things, and a track day yesterday indicated that they're nowhere near as sticky as my RA-1s were.

Any suggestions for starting tire pressures? I have to admit I was too busy running the event yesterday to spend much time checking pressures and the like, but I'll be heading back to the track soon (without the distraction of running the event) and I'm looking for some good baseline suggestions. I'm using the 225/45-15 size and I had them set at 31 psi cold.

The final purpose of these for me is in rally, so I won't be putting as much heat into them as I was yesterday on a short, tight track in 100F temperatures and very intense sunlight.

Suggestions from anyone who's run them before?

not sure how the tire engineers did it or if it's actually true, but in the a-x world everyone seems to believe that the 195 50 15 is the R1R that has the sticky compound all the way from full tread to the wear bars.... that said the Miatas I run against start with MUCH MUCH lower cold pressures ... on my CRX I start with 26 psi all the way around and the Miata drivers start lower than that ( I think) .,... certainly not higher (it's been hard to get used to such low pressures since the RE11's liked 10 - 15 #'s more )

hope this and all the up coming posts from actual Miata drivers helps you some

I've heard rumors about the depth of the sticky compound on this size. But these were new with a few hundred street miles on them, so it's fair to say they are still in the gooey stuff and that this really isn't a factor.

Lower, huh? They did seem happiest on the first session, when the temperatures were cooler and the pressures would have been lowest. They're mounted on 8" wheels, by the way.

the original advice I got was to start at 27.. then the adviser found out I had 7 1/2" instead of 7, said to start even lower ( 1 - 1 1/2 psi lower ) guess the same for a Miata

a buddy has started his ( a STS Miata ) at 24 all the way around ... and this is for 40 sec autocross, in 90 ° temps

I know my R888s like much, much lower pressures than my RA1s ever did. I haven't had any experience with the R1R but a friend is running them for the first time this summer on his Mazdaspeed. He's found lower pressures a bit more ideal, too.
