These things (the GCs) are famous for doing this. I should have checked it out at the dude's house before handing over the money. But like I said, I'm going to fix it. It's not so bad that I have to brace anything in order to cut out the bad areas. I can weld but I do have to purchase a welder. I'm not sure I'm putting the F2T in it. I'm thinking hard on putting in a KL V6. I don't think that's been done before on these.

The car, in general, needs a lot of stuff. So it's not just a simple matter of slapping the F2T in there and hitting the road. Good thing parts for these are cheap.

Oh, and it's like that on both sides.

The 1-2mm thick undercoating/rustproofing used on my mercedes delaminates with age and creates a pocket between the undercoat and metal for water/oxygen to accumulate and destroy 18ga german sheet meal. I am looking toward some rust repair myself so I feel your pain.

Good luck with the beast!

GC= Only one I know is the GC-chassis Subaru Impreza (1993-2001). That doesn't look like Subaru rust.

F2T= http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_F_engine#F2T

It's actually the 2nd-gen 626. The 1st-gen was rwd and mechanically similar to a 1st gen RX-7 minus the rotary. The 2nd-gens, introduced in '83, were the first FWD ones. There were coupes, sedans and 5-door hatches. All of them came in GT-turbo form in '86 and '87, with an engine called the FET, which is like a 2-liter, 8-valve older version of the F2T. My GT coupe looks like this, except white:

Thanks. A bit of context is always useful.

KL would be pretty sweet in it... but you already have the F2T! I dunno, either way, i'm glad that the car found a good home.

I believe a KL would actually be easier to swap in that it would potentially require less fab work. The problem with the F2T swap is the H-series trans.

KL would be more wiring, though. Would also be lighter.

I would approve of KL + boost.

Keep me posted on what goes on, i'll try to make it out there to help a few times as well. I want the F2T if you aren't going to use it.

I bought a first gen 626 coupe new back in 1980, and it had the dealer-applied Rusty Jones treatment. It didn't help much...the car rusted out anyway.

My parents had a 1981 626 Luxury sedan. It was a fantastic little car, but by the late 80's, it was getting pretty rusty. I really loved that car. I can't remember if it eventually rusted out, got wrecked or just wore out, but they replaced it with a new 90 Accord.

I haven't seen a 1st gen 626 in years.

I had a 633csi that was an absolute rust bucket and had been ziebarted, BUT in their defense, you are supposed to take the car in every year after it's protected for them to inspect it and fix any issues. At least that's what the documentation I found in the car said.

Aside from the propensity to rust, what did you think of the car?

It was a great little car. Comfortable, fun to drive, handled great, got decent mileage and at least in my mind it was attractive. The main problem is it wasn't very fast...the 2 liter engine was rated at about 80hp if I remember correctly. If I had one today I'd drop in a Miata engine.

I owned it for 20 years and about 160,000 miles. It still ran and drove great, but the ongoing rust (plus some cretin ran a red light and T-boned me) led to its ultimate demise.

I bought a goofy air dam from J.C. Whitney and bolted it on the front end...in retrospect it was kind of stupid, but hey, it was the 80s, I thought it was cool at the time.

so what, exactly, was "ironic" about the rust in the OP? cars rust out like that all the time- people don't think they need to actually wash the parts of the car that they don't see so they rust in the invisible places.

i know i've gotten some weird looks in car washes when i'd open each door and spray out the door jambs really good with the high pressure hose.. they also like it when i get down on my knees and get as much of the underbody as i can get without jacking the car up..

I had a weak air dam on my 1980 Datsun - it was a sign of the times......I always thought this car had a BMW 2002 look to it.
