Can't believe I haven't seen this referenced by the Hive...
I saw something about that on popular mechanics website. I think they said the lasers start at around $55k, so not exactly practical for do it yourselfers. But it does seem like something a guy could get a decent business going with.
laser ablation is a neat tool. We use it at work to machine sub-micron sized features.
Been noodling on how to use the technology to make a spot-weld removing tool.
One thing that worries me about any of the laser tools is eye damage from stray laser reflection. The damage is done before you even blink. Easy to control in a lab type environment, but maybe not so much in a garage full of buddies drinking beer and wrenching on the challenge car.
