Gear,
Check out Fiero.nl for transverse swaps of non-4T80e trans w/the N*, like Nashco said, it's been done w/MANY different types, just more one off jobs...

Between everyone in the household we have the 00' Intrigue 3.5L and an 02' Regal 3.8L. Intrigue is better hands down. Can't manage more than 22-23mpg out of the regal with same drivers, same commute, etc. Regal has one third of the mileage and still gets moving much slower with the pedal down.
i actually looked into this for my s10 project a while ago. for manual transmissions, you can use any that came with the GM metric pattern, such as the s-series 2.5, 2.2 pushrod, 2.8, camaro 2.8,3.4,3.1, the Astro 2.8, or the dodge dakota (3rd gen) 4 cyl with an ax15 tranny. the ax15 was availible in a bunch of jeeps, giving you the ability of 4wd. the transfer case was also the same in thise jeeps as the jeeps grand cherokee with AWD, so thats not too far a stretch either.
flywheels are tough. cheapest ive seen is the one from CHR fab. cut the stock bellhousing for started clearance, TG in a reinforcemet plate or the bellhousing will crack.
as far as the computer, this is why i stopped trying to do this. good luck finding someone willing to hack the factory. but megasquirt may be an option.
other things to consider: heater hoses come out in some funky places, providing clearance issues. motor mounts will have to be fabbed, and be really odd to connect to anything. and the factory accessory drives will hit anything else thats in the engine bay.
hope i helped. Michael
