Central Florida is mostly dominated by miatas. Note that the MR class was completely different in the 1st and 2nd half of the season with nobody making 2/3rds of the events.
SR: Miata, Miata, Miata
PR: MR2, E30 325i, e28 535i
MR: Ford Ranger, Volvo 940, Miata
Oregon checking in:
MR: '85 325i with 2.7-liter swap, '85 325i with 2.7-liter swap, '80 320i, and were going to fourth place to note the '89 Mazda B2200!!
PR: '91 318i, '83 Corolla AE71, BMW 635 (This season was a 3-way tie between three winners that each showed up once for a class of one!)
SR: '94 BMW 318, '87 325i, I think third was an RX-8, but model isn't listed in the results.

clearly only those of us on the two coasts rally BMWs widely, lol. The central guys are all Miata!
There is an E36 318is for sale locally that's rust free and has a blown head gasket (oil in the coolant). I was thinking it would be a fun beater rallycross car.
OVR Season results in MR:
1: Miata
2: E30 (318)
3: Miata
4: Subaru 2.5rs
This thread makes me want to buy/build a second E30 for rallycross duty...

It's a tiny region but for what it's worth I think a Miata has won every PR and MR event one has been entered in, in BMR.

Wait a sec... Assuming there cannot be multiple Bee's in rallycross, is the rx7 supercharged or does he have a Miata too?
In reply to RedGT:
The RX7 is his wife's car. Sort of. Well, the caged second gen is. The super clean white first gen was retired from rallycross as far as I know. The TT was kind of a failed experiment. The Miata is the one that was rear ended and sort of repaired and now wears FOX suspension and a supercharger.
Bee is a fun guy to talk to about cars.
Detroit Region-
SR - MR2, FR-S, IS300
PR - Miata, MR2, Miata
MR - MR2, Miata, Miata
There is a team of guys running a caged beetle thats quite impressive up here too.
This thread really makes me want that rotary swap finished...

They had the white FB at the Eastern States Challenge in 2016 at Frostburg.

The white FB moved to VA and is their east coast rallyx car.

As you are the only GLDiv car that's beaten me, I will fully support your contention. Though I still don't know how you did it with no compression and running out of fuel...
Ironically, the only non-BMWs I've ever lost to at a rallycross (at least that I can recall) are 2nd gen RX7s (you, Shawn Roberts, and Roberto Moreton). So RX7s can DIAF as far as I'm concerned :/
When 1st gear goes to 40mph and you don't have enough power for 2nd gear and if you have to shift 1-2 times per run multiplied by 16 runs in a weekend that's 32-64 seconds of time "gained" which the course was very favorable to that gearing for me that weekend :)
as far as detroit region SCCA we have a strange mix..
Miata supercharged, miata NA, Various E30s, Porsche 911s(1984 and a 996 NA), mr2s NA and turbo, rx7s and fox body mustangs are our usual top spots.

I didn't know that. I thought the caged FC was over there. I'm glad he's still running it, it's a pretty clean example.

Who snuck an impulse into a rwd class
JR Impulses are Chevettes with a Scirocco body.
The Turbo models had a 4 link but the nonturbo kept the torque arm rear suspension.

I thought Nathan sold his 996.
Oregon Washington rallycross, my buddy campaigns a 1984 celica st. Previa axle, BEAMS swap. Has a ton of fun.

Prepping an e30 for rallyx:
- add a skid plate
- swap in an e36 or quicker rack (basically bolts in)
- add rally tires.
that's about all you need to have a real shot at competing locally wherever if you're a decent driver.
How about best looking at rally cross?

I have been campaigning an e28 535 in PR for the last year or two. In Central Florida we run a more wide open event where I am in 2nd almost the whole course. Same thing at Frostburg last year at the national challenge. When I run in Georgia, courses are a lot tighter and closer to an autocross course. The national championship courses look similar. Has anyone ever tried going to a lower ratio diff to stay in 1st gear more often? If I bump up to MR, my car has OEM diffs available with ratios from 2.79 to 4.1. I did the math once and figured out a 2.9 diff put me at about 42 mph in first gear.
I'm so glad Chris "that Corvette guy" lives in Iowa.
In reply to irish44j:
I have two theories on the lack of Miatas around here:
I competed a bunch for the first decade of this millennium and never saw a single Miata. I remember our local rules and stewards being really emphatic about no convertibles, and no tall/narrow vehicles. I'm not sure if current local rules still prohibit convertibles, or if the legacy of those rules sways local competitors away.
If not the rules, sheer cost keeps Miatas away, our local used Miata market is no Atlanta! A running NA around here is $2000-$4000, and then you have to try and track down a factory hardtop (another $1000 if you can even find one.) A beater E30 around here is pretty easy to find for Challenge money, and is ready to roll.

Rack is Mod only, rally tires are Prepared and up...
If you want to compete in Mod, pretty much any box with a roof and four tires will get you started.

With an e28 you have plenty of torque, so not sure why you're worried about winding it out to high revs. Nick in his e28 used his shifting quite a bit to keep it in the max torque area of the curve. Low-torque cars like mine are the ones that have to wind it up to high revs to be fast, and I still use all of 2nd and occasionally 3rd....
There are natural shift points in rallycross where you can use downshifts and upshifts to orient the car into/out of turns anyhow. I actually sometimes wish I had MUCH shorter ratios so I could use 3rd more often.
The thought of a rallycross course where any car can just stay in 1st sounds like the ultimate boredom
