I was looking up S2000 values to compare with a local car that's for sale. I normally look a few different sources and kind of come up with an average.
While doing this, I came across this disparity in values. I know these sources will vary somewhat, but this is a huge difference. Look at these links for the same car. Did I make a mistake, or what?

http://www.kbb.com/honda/s2000/2000-honda-s2000/convertible-2d/?pricetype=private-party&vehicleid=6294&intent=trade-in-sell&mileage=60000&r=826651209499686900
Before you just say something like "well that's Edmunds" , I use these sites and multiple others pretty routinely, and they NEVER disagree like these two. What gives?
Edit - Apparently Edmunds won't link to the page that gives the value. These are the parameters I used - 2000 S2000, silver, 60k miles, outstanding condition, ZIP code 44278. The values I came up with are $6075 trade, $6787 private party, and $7973 retail. That's like a $10k plus difference!

Doing a 200 mile search on Autotrader for 2000-04 models seems to agree with KBB. The cheapest asking price is $9K w/ 160K miles and topping out at over $28K.

Beat you to it awhile back:

In reply to Fletch1:
Hey, that was more than a day ago. How do you expect me to remember that? Besides, I wasn't shopping an S2000 then.
But seriously, while informative, that thread never really explained the disparity, did it?

I thought you were buying a Buick? Your not having a midlife crisis are ya? I have noticed Edmunds to be lower on most things I search for. I still believe for most people KBB is the only thing to use and that's what they seem to stick with. That's my experience anyway. Not sure why they are so way off on the S2000. Maybe they think it's the same car as the Prelude And no, never really got much out of that thread.

Estimated values on niche cars like that seem to rarely be accurate.

Oh, and then there is Clearbook:
http://clearbook.truecar.com/used-honda-prices/s2000-convertible-pricing/2000#show/8tc-x2ynq3/43302/60000/good/4ym8iy/3b2uam/o/t_curve
They seem in the middle. I've been using this one. They also show a price certainty of 28% in the lower right hand corner, which reflects e_pie's statement, which makes sense. If you search for something like a Camry, the price certainty goes way up to like 99%.
From my researching, it seems like a car like the one in my example is usually in the $15k-17k range.
An S2000 for under $10K? Edmunds, show me that car.
When it comes to new car prices, Edmunds SEEMS to be in the ballpark. Used car prices? Their computer programs are on drugs.
KBB seems to be much more in the ballpark for S2000's around here. They're suggesting pretty close to what dealers are asking. I offered KBB value on an '06, and the seller seems fine with it. Still need to iron out details though, and there is always the chance someone will swoop in and offer more in the next couple days before I can go down and grab it.

They are out there. Really.

In outstanding condition with 60k on it? And a clear title? Show me.

You can find early years with over 100k miles all day for under $10k. Check autotrader
I got mine for 7.5k with 102k miles on it. It needed a top and a few miscolanious repairs that totaled less than $500. They are out there, you just have to look a little harder to find them.
My buddy's car is an 02 that he got for about $8k 2 years ago.
.... with 18k miles.
Yes, he's an shiny happy person.

A friend told me that sometimes in sales tax states there is the sale price and then there is the declared price.
Maybe Edmunds is skewed in those states.
Also, when I was looking there was an unusually high percentage of salvage cars.

I have noticed this as well. Outside of dealers, seems like roughly 1/4 of the listings are salvage cars. That's an awful lot. Seems like a car this new should not have so many salvage vehicles.

Very similar to MR2 Turbos. A lot left the road backwards. S2000's seem to be heading down the same path with many second and third owners not experienced enough to handle a car that can snap oversteer.
Around here it's difficult to find a S2000 for sale anyway. As far as values, NADA seems to be the closest.

Since the values are so low they probably total pretty easily.
