So,. I got my "new" classic 900 home and I have a few issues I need to sort before I start driving it.
I realise it has 233,000 miles.. but it is WAY down on power from it's claimed 140hp and the CEL is on. According to the sequence it is flashing, I have either a bad knock sensor or it is giving a bad reading. Where is it so I can check to even make sure it is plugged in or so I can replace it.
The car does have a slight miss. Now that the exhaust is off, I can hear it when accelerating in first and second gear. I am hoping that replacing the plugs, wires, cap, and rotor will help (waiting on the wires and a day off to do the work)
I also want to replace the fuel filter.. where is it?
The airbag steering wheel is stuffed. my NG900 (a 94) has a perfect one. anybody know if it will retrofit to my 91?
The ABS light is on... the pedal seems a bit stiff. Anything I should know abut the ABS in these cars?
Thanks ahead of time!
You're going to need a Bentley manual; buy one if you haven't already. It is an abridged version of the factory manual, not like a Haynes or Chilton.
The knock sensor is bolted to the block beneath the intake runners, in the middle of the block. It can be tough to get the connector off down there. If you install a new sensor, make sure you orient it correctly and torque it to spec (10 ft-lb, IIRC). Too much and it doesn't work right. Note the angle at which the plug protrudes before removing it if you have to, so you can put it back right. I don't know why it's important but it's noted in the manual.
Fuel filter is beneath the car, toward the rear, ahead of the gas tank, right side. Replace the rubber-rimmed washers when you do the filter. You can draw down some of the system pressure by putting a mity-vac on the fuel pressure reg. but it's still going to be messy when replace the filter.
I don't believe your NG wheel fits the c900. If you replace the wheel, take care not to damage the clock spring for the air bag -- it's fragile and $$. IMPORTANT: I somehow set off the SRS light after a repair on a friend's car's dash when I took the wheel off. If you trigger it, it needs to be re-set with a factory tool. I would definitely search saabnet to see how to deal with the wheel so you don't have to go and pay someone to re-set your SRS light.
Re: ABS, my guess is the accumulator. I have limited experience with the ABS system. Search www.saabnet.com/tsn/bb/900/index.html. Their search feature's not the best; use quotes around phrases to help it search them better.
I thought the fuel filter was under the hood on the c900's? Maybe it was on the pre-'88's, I could be wrong though.

Yes, for 8V, it's under the hood; 16Vs have it under the car. That way, you're virtually assured of having gas spray/drip all over you.
of course.. glad to see saab was looking out for us
Let me check, but I think I have a Bentley for the car that I don't need anymore.
I have narrowed the miss down to ignition. Replaced the plugs today (had to buy a new socket, lost mine) and it helped a bit. Still waiting on the wires to arrive.
Anybody know of any problems with me replacing the stock coil with a bosch bluecoil?
