Crossposting here, but the other post had a different subject, so hoping this more descriptive one gets the right traffic.

does anyone know if I can swap an automatic Saab 92X Aero limited slip rear differential onto an automatic Linear? They're both 4.11, according to saab92x.com forum posts, at least. Further, since Saabarus are rare, does anyone know if a WRX LSD rear end can go onto the Saab? And what years?

as an aside, speech to text for posts like this is absolutely worthless. Just a game of MadGab, basically

I don't know specifically but the 9-2 is just a Subi in a SAAB suit.  If the swap works for the Impreza it should for the 9-2.  My understanding is that the 9-2 Aero is a WRX with some STI suspension parts.

In reply to Aaron_King :

Thanks for the lead, Aaron. I'm first making sure that nothing is different in the drivetrain between the Impreza wagon and the 92x, so far so good there. Next I'll make sure ppl have done that swap.

While I wait on a reply from another forum, someone else has brought up the idea that a WRX limited slip is by now pretty worn out and pointless anyway. Does that idea have merit? Am I barking up a dead tree with thinking I can get factory LSD?

In reply to P3PPY :

I can't speak to that platform specifically but the idea has merit. For example on NC Miatas the stock LSD is pretty weak sauce, the tabs have a tendency to break off of the friction disks even in regular street driving which renders the units ineffective, so most people say not to waste time on factory LSDs and just to go straight for a Quaife or OS Giken.

Eesh man, I like this forum. Maybe there aren't all the answers here, but on another forum, the first reply I got was filled with zero technical advice and solely "you don't need to do that unless _insert_specific_knowledge_litmus_test_."

SMH

More searching found that at least some claim the LSD is only good for 50k miles.

I don't know a ton about that generation of Imprezas and Saabarus, but I believe all the diffs you're talking about should be R160s and relatively interchangeable.  You may need different axles depending on what variant you grab, but that will just be a case of figuring out what you need- it'll be something stock for some Subaru either way.

Wellll it looks possible.

Using car-part it looks like I can get a 25k mile 2004 WRX example for $200 shipped from a yard in Stoystown PA to my local yard. Another $100 for a pair of rear half shafts (according to RockAuto they are different parts but have the same length, outboard hub and spline count, and wheels)

Using an open diff I would pay about the same for the rear end but save $100ish on the shafts

Ive never stopped to ask if LSD makes much of a difference for snow, rally cross in an AWD car

Thoughts?

Bump for:

Is it worth an extra $100 and possible fitment issues and possibly missing a DST rally in order to go from open diff to a 26k mile LSD from a WRX?

Like for like is $185, but from a WRX is $200 + $100 in new CV shafts
