back in '08 I bought this POS '91deathscort from John Brown, a bit of rust but it had a CD player and the A/C blew cold. the next day it drove down to FL and we've been driving it since...
the other week we loaned it to a friend and said it just stopped running, had it towed home and looks like the timing belt skipped a tooth, I'd replaced it last year and in the rush didn't change the 175k mile water pump or tensioner (integrated into the pump). I was planning to sell it cheap in another month or so when we get a new car but after this I decided she just needed to go
so $355 later off she goes to be re-made into a Chinese super tanker or something... I kept the battery so they docked me $10... $10 for a 6 month old battery = good deal IMHO ;-)
as much as I hated that car she will be missed... she treated us well and in the end cost us about $50-75 a year to operate not including fuel, tax, and insurance... not bad
TX people must be looking at the rust and saying "what is that stuff?"
For $355 in scrap value, that shows why it's hard to find a good running $500 car anymore. I remember sending stuff away for 50 bucks and feeling lucky for it....
I had to sell my Deathscort last year. Made good friends with a highway median. Those things are good cars.

yups 175k on it... had to replace the hard brake lines going to the rear, the pads a few times, a rotor and a timing belt... thing was simple to work on as well... would have been so much more awesome with a stick instead of the slushbox though
always hard to say goodbye to an old friend.. no matter how dysfunctional
Looks like you gave up some sweet seat covers too!

Stage two clutch baby, YEAH. Oh.. and she sounded like THIS
Sad to see her go. If you were closer I would have done $400 for it too!
Here in Texas we have lots of rust free bodies but our plastics turn to powder (plasti-rust).

Talk about texas? Well, it's 60 something degrees. Very nice in January. Although i remember in 06 it hit 102 on march 2nd so the clock is ticking. Prime time for working on cars in texas is RIGHT NOW before it gets hot.
So does the escort merit a replacement, and what will it be?
I totaled my 95 with 290k on it. The AC was still cold

Amen to that! The Mazda based rigs were light years ahead of the 1st gen cars in terms of build quality. Between rotten strut towers and main bearings, my '87GT hit the boneyard at 141k.
Off to Craigslist...
