I found this E46 M3 and the price seems good enough that I'm interested even though I'm currently in Texas. The fact that it's a convertible with the hardtop appeals to me. Am I going to wish I got a coupe? Can anyone recommend a good shop in Sacramento where I can have it inspected? Is there something I'm neglecting to account for in my desire to buy this car?

Why is it salvage titled? If it was because of bodywork, that’s one thing. If it was, say, flood damaged that could be very different.

Ding, ding, ding!! We have a winner.
Why the salvage title? If the seller can't document it, then I'd be prepared to walk, or have it deeply and thoroughly inspected and then lowball the hell out of it.
A lot of these and s2000's have salvage titles from theft. Usually for replacing the seats and cloth tops.
The salvage title was from this damage, but the hardtop is no longer available. That's a deal breaker unfortunately as the damage doesn't look that bad.

I would avoid buying a salvage euro car in Sacramento, there are a lot of really sketchy shops that buy and repair those kind of cars (especially bmw and Audi) to sell.
I'm surprised that amount of damage totaled the car.

After doing a rough KBB.com value estimate for a 2002 M3 convertible 6MT, I'm not. Would almost certainly cost more to repair than the final value of the car.
Depending on the price, it could be an excellent S54 donor.
Edit: I see the car pictured above is not the car in the OP link. $6900 doesn't sound terribly unreasonable, but if the goal is a track car, then yeah - you'll want to hold out for a coupe.

From what I understand, yes, you are.
You can get clean title verts with the manual for around $10k, doesnt make sense to have a salvage title one.
This wouldn't be a track car. Primarily fun on the street, probably some local autocross. I like the idea of a convertible M3, but I also like the idea of putting the hardtop on for less noise on long trips and better insulation from harsh weather. I'd really like to drive an example of coupe, convertible and hardtop at some point.
