Grand Challenge Competitors:
Be ready for the Concours event! Here are some things to remember:

  • Event gates open at 11 AM for show parking and preparation. Be early.
  • Bring your build documentation. You will be given a final value assessment at the event, and have the potential to lose points through penalties if you cannot prove that you are within the $1000 budget. No excuses or promises to get documentation later will be accepted.
  • Remember the scoring criteria. Concentrate on what you can earn points for. Cars shall be awarded 0-10 points based on overall appeal (2), presentation (2), notability/originality (2), concept execution (2), and fit and finish (2).

Here is what the scoring instructions say about the scoring criteria:

Overall Appeal: General impression of the vehicle; this is the "judge's preference" category. Does it look like a finished project? Is it interesting and attractive? This is the most subjective category, and it is the appropriate place to reward a car that you really enjoy overall, or to give a 0 to a car that just seems to have completely missed the mark.

Presentation: The appeal, completeness, and support of the vehicle as displayed at the show. Judge the themes, supporting documentation or materials, or other elements of the display itself. Does the vehicle draw in the public and give them an emotional connection or interesting experience with the entry?

Notability/Originality: This score reflects the level of uniqueness, creativity, interest, and innovation displayed by the entry. A stock vehicle that is commonly seen on sale for $1000 that has not been altered in any significant way would score a 0; a vehicle with a creative visual theme, interesting vehicle or model history, challenging mechanical engineering, or other noteworthy build elements would score higher.

Concept Execution: How well did this team achieve what it set out to do? If there is a theme, is it complete and pervasive throughout the build? If there was a major engineering project, is it functional and well done? What is the level of achievement in the core goals of the build for the entry?

Fit and Finish: this is the classic "car show" scoring criteria. How does the paint look? Is the interior in good shape? If it is a racing interior, does it look clean and functional? Is the bodywork straight and attractive? Is the engine bay attractive? If there are decorations or modifications, are they appealing and well constructed?

Any questions, let me know! GOOD LUCK to all Grand Challengers!
