Hey all, my Civic's paint looks terrible and while I'm waiting to find an engine trying to figure out something to do about it. I'm planning on vinyl wrapping the car, because I can't afford to paint it - and if looks decent that's good enough. I have a bunch of bubbling from rust and peeling clear coat on the hood and fenders so I'm planning on sanding that down and smoothing out with body filler. I know someone is going to suggest some super awesome option, but I'm on a budget and if it looks decent or even fair it's better than it is now.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a respirator? I was planning on buying one of the 3M half-face respirators with removable filters. OR should I even be doing this? My understanding is that automotive paint is insanely toxic, but I didn't know if that applied to the dust as well. I'm probably being over cautious, but better safe than sorry.

When it's dry you pretty much only have to worry about dust.   If you have a decent dust respirator you should be fine.  If  you can do the sanding outside that will help, too.

A couple of box fans, one blowing out and one sucking in fresh air will help, too.

Okay, so it's not that big of a deal then - just exercise common sense? I'm not going to be doing heavy sanding either, just a few places I want to even up the clear coat and rust spots so it doesn't look terrible with the wrap.

I knew someone would say that! Well I'm hoping I can get the surfaces smooth (eliminate surface rust and peeling clear coat) and if I'm unhappy with how the wrap looks I can get a cheap paint job at some point.

I'm going to start with wrapping the hatch, since it's a small panel, and I'll see if I like how it looks, what the effort involved is and how much material it takes.
