My friend's 2000 L series wagon needs front struts and springs. Are they going to be like normal strut/springs or will I need some goofy tool like the older Luminas? I am kinda worried as noone seems to stock the springs for this car.

I have no experience working on these but I have the shop manual for a 2004 L series here.
I'm pretty sure its the same as I stole some parts from a junkyard car (2000) to put on my 04.
Removal seems simple, 2 bolts on the hub, one "strut mount bolt" (FSM says dispose after use). The sway bar end link is on the strut as well as the brake line/abs sensor so they need disconnect too.
It looks a little more complex/intimidating to swap out the springs once you get the assembly off. Using a strut spring compressor (compressed) remove the "strut shaft nut while holding the strut shaft with a TORX" socket." then release everything, slowly I hope.
The book mentions the strut mount has a fancy key, so it will only fit in one way. Pay attention to the 4 nubs on the strut mount, one is different. Be sure to assemble the strut mount on the new strut with the "half round notch pointing to the front" so it will line up correctly when you try to put it back in.
Hope this helps.
if my 2000 L series needed springs AND shocks (how did that happen btw?), I'd just buy complete assemblies out of a salvage yard from the newest/lowest mileage example I could find. Should fit all the way through '05 or whenever they gave up on that awful awful car.
99 to 03 SAAB 9-3 parts may fit, they use the same platform. I know things like brakes and wheels fit but I am not sure about springs/struts.
Thanks everyone, We will find out in a week how easy it is.
in reply to belteshazzar: As far as getting junkyard parts, all the ones I've seen are rusted worse than the one we have. It probably needed struts for a long time, but one of the springs broke so while it's apart might as well do the struts
Front Strunts, springs and pads and rotors were done in about three hours, the Valve Cover gaskets will wait for another day. Who decided Mom's wagon needed 4 cams to go to the Stop and Shop?
