Saw this at a Days Inn in Hilton Head Island, SC. I've never seen one of these before.
The guy driving it says he drove it to SC from Connecticut. That's a long haul. The pictures don't do it justice.
Thought Y'all might get a kick out of it.

that was originally build by Hanz Glas GmbH, the company more well known for the goggomobile. They were bought by BMW in 1966.
Originally known as the Glas 1300 GT, it was refitted with BMW badges and engine before being renamed the 1600 GT. This puts that car as being from 1966 to 1968 when it was discontinued.
They are a pretty cool little car..and rather rare
We stocked filters and tune-up stuff when I started at the BMW dealership (probably before you were born?).
Not sure Max Hoffman ever imported these - anyone know?
yeah, same color as that lusso . . . .
I was in Savannah last weekend for the historic races. Local BMW dealer had a Z8 at their hospitality tent & there was a Z1 in the hotel parking lot. Sorry, no pics.

IIRC the 1300GT was also the first (German) car that used a toothed belt to drive the cam instead of a chain.
History played a bit of a cruel joke on Glas - a few years before BMW acquired them, the Bavarian state put a lot of pressure on them to buy BMW, which was close to collapsing. A few years later when the market for Microcars (Glas's mainstay) had collapsed and the new models weren't doing well, the roles were reversed.

Good call. BTW--last week's Chasing Classic Cars with the old man's Lusso in the Staten Island middle class garage absolutely blew my mind.
As for the BMW--that thing seems so insanely rare, I'd be VERY hesitant to take it on a big road trip. Then again, that's the joy of owning the car, I suppose...
That is a beautiful car. I have never seen that model before now. It would be interesting to know the history of that particular car and how it has arrived/survived in such good condition to year 2011.
I would have loved to get the story, but he was leaving and I had the main entrance of the hotel laying in the parking lot.
