I am getting a proper timing light tomorrow and will report what my initial is and what I end up with as my initial when i get total set.

Not some much... It was at 31* but it seems that my distributor only has 10* of advance at total so it was driving okay. Still not safe for the track.

Ended up at 36 total and 16 initial, seems happy.

That's what my 302 liked, when I had a mechanical distributor. Did you hook up the vacuum advance?

If I ever have another car with a carb it will get a MSD 6530.  Lock the dizzy at the max advance that you will ever need then program the amount of retard at each rpm.

Yes i am running with the canister hooked to ported vac at the moment.

Try full manifold vacuum for a bit, and see if you like the difference.  You'll need to tune just a tick leaner.
