We're looking for a small scanner that will work on older vehicles as well, I'd like to get one that works through our PC's at the shop. Has anyone here ever used one of these or have any specific recommendations?

ebay Scanner

I use a bluetooth OBDII connector and run Torque on my android. Thats my suggestion. $30 in all and does more than most scanners...

And I was about to suggest a Bearcat.

We've got a decent OBD2 scanner, I was looking for some good OBD1 tools. The last one I have a lot of experience with is the old thumbwheel Snap-on scanner and those pop up on ebay from time to time, but I'm thinking that perhaps technology has marched forward in the past 20 years.
