In anticipation of this years Challenge, I attended the local Starting Line Autocross school. I've been around road racing in one form or another for the last 45 years or so and figgered I wouldn't have too much trouble with autocross but you can never go wrong with schooling by experts. Let me tell you, schooled is the right word for it. I completely underestimated the level of difficulty associated with navigating cones laid out on an abandoned airfield. As I told my instructor after the very first exercise: "The rest of the day is gravy; this exercise covered the entry fee."
Speaking of entry fee: 350 bucks. This got you an entire day of instruction and driving.
Plus a year of SCCA membership which includes Sports Car magazine (90 clam).
Plus a regional Solo event entry (a Ulysses Grant).
Plus a national Solo event entry (a Benjamin).
Plus a Track Night in America (yet another Benji).
Plus a Starting Line hat (I have no idea).
PLUS a year of GRM (Priceless!). The swag about covers the cost of the school but it was a deal without it. Well, maybe the year of GRM...
There are three more schools this year: Atlanta, NCM, and Louisville, KY. Here's the linky: https://www.scca.com/pages/starting-line
Highly recommended! Even if you're not going to drive the Autocross, it is truly a great and fun time!
