Sadly, I expected this to happen. This has happened to me a couple times now, almost making me want to stay away from selling any sort of electronics indefinitely on eBay.
Hopefully he sends back the part you shipped him as opposed to his. At this point, that's sadly the best outcome.
As far as other places to sell car parts, there's really not much else that has the same reach as eBay does. FB/CL only really work if you wanna stay local, but that just limits you greatly. A caveat to that is your specific car's group i.e. 'LSx Parts For Sale' etc. I'd say Row 52 just might be the next best option you have when it comes to used OEM parts, but I'd assume buyers on there want bottom dollar.
Or might just be stuck at making multiple accounts on multiple forums after you make a certain number of posts!

Hmm... I wonder if something like this happens, can you freeze your PayPal account so eBay can't charge you?
I'm in a similar boat as Tim and have a house full of crap I need to unload.
You sort of can by maintaining zero balance and not linking to a bank account (only credit card). You account will then be useless for buying until the $20 is paid or the issue is resolved. This is what I do and the one time things went pear-shaped it was nice looking at a -$250 paypal balance for a month until they ruled in my favor, rather than being out $250 actual cash for the same amount of time.

If he sends me his part back, we are going to have problems.
I have pictures of mine including the serial number and the sealed sticker from when it was rebuilt. I sold it for $350.00 so if he makes the mistake of taking my part and returning his I will try my darndest to figure out how to file charges. Theft of $350 is a felony here in Florida, not to mention I can probably articulate some sort of a mail fraud if I try. I haven't looked into it but ripping off a detective is probably not a smart move on his part.

This is the kind of thing that prepaid legal service is perfect for. Just let them pursue him in small claims court.
If it comes back and it is your original part, I'd just resell it. He probably misdiagnosed it. This time, maybe $150 BIN price plus $200 shipping and handling?
So what happened here, Jeremy?
my buddy just got screwed on a sealed NIB computer processor under similar circumstances and it reminded me that we don’t have closure here
Scroll up a few posts Pat. He got hosed.
In reply to OHSCrifle :
No, he never said whether or not he got his correct part back.

Guy never sent the part back. I am assuming he either figured out the problem wasn't my part or he left it installed and no longer had it to return.
I hope I don't receive it without warning in the mail 3 months from now...

Does that mean he has your part and the refunded money? Or no refund was given?

In reply to Indy-Guy :
No refund was issued, I believe he can still send the part back at some point because there was not an end date mentioned on the dispute documentation.

There is usually a set time for the buyer to send your item back. I would contact eBay to see where you stand.
I had a buyer not return something after I manually approved a return. After like 14 or 30 days eBay sent a reminder and then finally closed the case with me keeping the money. I felt kinda bad, it was a laser line he said was off level and I have no reason to doubt him but he had every chance. Any way, look at your dispute and there should be a status thing telling you if it’s still open. If it is, there should be a time limit specified. If he doesn’t return it within the time limit he gets nothing, the case closes, and he can’t reopen it. Best outcome for you I think!
One thing you can do with this community: Have someone on the forum local to your buyer stop by and have a chat. Literally, see how it's going. We're all gearheads and undoubtedly your buyer is a GH too. I've found that common ground link some pretty diverse individuals over the years. We all have stories...
In reply to rdcyclist :
better angle would be give him somewhere to go to voluntarily in the most open way possible but a great idea nonetheless as this is how the hive spreads.

So Ebay closed the dispute when the buyer failed to return the part last year.
Fast forward 6 months. The shiny happy person disputed the transaction with his credit card company last week. PayPal just charged back $375.00 from my account and charged me a $20.00 charge back fee.
I apparently have no recourse. I provided PayPal with my receipt for having the part rebuilt and tested and the case number of the closed Ebay dispute explaining that the jerk had a chance to return the part but declined to do so. Despite this the guy gets his money back and I am out shipping, a 2003 Corvette abs pump and a $20 charge back fee.
Dude no way. What about PayPal seller protection?? What the ever loving berkeley
That sucks, some people just know how to ruin other people’s days.
I had a similar experience selling some sports cards on eBay recently. Felt like I was being shook down to get money back after the transaction.
This is exactly why I dislike the eBay / Paypal combination. Sorry you are going through this.
I’ve started throwing things away because a lot of the time it’s just not worth the hassle. I bet ebay did refund you the seller’s fee either and PP didn’t take care of the fees they charged you too.
When they do this the seller is out part value, plus charge back fee, plus eBay fees and Paypal fees.....
How do you protect yourself ?
Open a separate bank account just for ebay-paypal and keep the balance low ?
Any other ideas ?
I’d be tempted to file a small claims court case against the buyer.

This is a pretty good option if you and the buyer are in the same state.
You could also take Ebay and/or PayPal to small claims. They will just call you the day before and settle out. It isn't worth their time to send a representative from the company.

Whenver I sell any used part for any reason, I put a small mark on it (using a punch) that wouldn't be noticeable as something non-original. I've only had to put this to use once, and I asked the seller to send me a photo of the item he wanted me to take back. It didn't have the mark on it, so I refused. Clearly he was trying to send me his old, non-working part and not the one I sent him. pound sand.

I don't think he has to send it back at this point. It wasn't disputed with Ebay or PayPal my understanding is it came from his credit card company.
