I have to admit, that was kind of fun to watch.

Might want the mods to retitled this. Lots of people are going to think hes dead.

Actually, we might want to hold off until he returns back to earth. Just to make sure he comes back alive. In which case, this thread is going to get very weird very quick.
Also, do we not put stuff in the off topic discussion anymore? Can we just put anything here?

He is already back on earth. It was a short flight.

He landed. He survived. Got a hug from Bezos.

They filmed him having a conversation with Bezos after the flight, it's the first time i've ever heard him have a conversation like a normal person.  It was pretty cool.

Man that was a quick trip. I'd hate to go to space and then not spend any time there.

Also, he looks fantastic for 90.

He seemed very subdued when he first exited the capsule, but it became apparent that he was also very moved by the whole experience. It would be worth watching a replay to get his take on the whole adventure and I'm sure there will be lots of interviews with him to see later this week.

I had no idea it was going on.  Definitely glad that this was NOT a post about his passing.

Very cool.  He did seem absolutely gobsmacked by the whole thing.

Shatner was actually overcome by emotion of what he experienced and was crying.     He kept repeating over and over about how thin the "blue sky" really is and how space is black and is death.

That wasn't an oversight.

Guy (admittedly, a guy with very deep pockets) builds a machine that covers a measured distance at a very rapid rate. The stakes are high, even though the primary goal is recreation. There is an element of motorsport going on here.

Buy hey, I'm new here, so I owe you an apology. Sorry.

Yeah, New Shepard is a suborbital flight.  Rocket goes up, rocket comes down, and at the very top of the flight it spends a bit of time above the Karman line that is the definition of where "space" begins.

If you want to spend more than a few minutes in space you need to go into orbit, where the vehicle is moving "sideways" fast enough that it "misses" the ground (Douglas Adams was right!).  That requires about  4-5x the delta vee, which takes a much bigger rocket.  Blue Origin doesn't do that yet (they're working on it).

Shatner is not your average 90 year old. I saw him a few years back live when he did a tour screening Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. After each screening, Shatner came out on stage and did a Q&A. When he came out on stage, he was doing karate kicks and chops and going nuts! I could have done without the 30 minutes on horse breeding, but otherwise, it was awesome. Had some really interesting things to say about his career and life. I think it's cool that he got to do this today, and watching his reaction was interesting.

Priceline really is branching out on their flight offerings. (Also Shatner and Priceline itself is a rather interesting story).

In consideration of your heinous offense, the internet police have been notified.  Any further transgressions on your part and they take away your birthday.  You.  Have.  Been.  Warned.

Haha!  I love Shatner.  The only oversight on the execution of this flight was in not sending Betty White along too.

grassroots

adjective

grass·roots | \ ˈgras-ˌrüts

, -ˌru̇ts \

variants: or less commonly grassroot \ ˈgras-ˌrüt

, -ˌru̇t \

Definition of grassroots

1 : basic, fundamental the grassroots factor in deciding to buy a house

2 : being, originating, or operating in or at the grass roots a grassroots organization grassroots political support

So even if we let you slide on the "motorsports" thing, there's no getting around the fact that Bezos' involvement necessarily completely and totally excludes this from being a "grassroots" effort.  I'm afraid it's off to the woodshed for you.

Considering the number of private individuals that can get a person into space, I don't think you can get any more grassroots.

This is just the beginning and it is awesome to be alive while it is happening.
