Looking for tire ideas for my Shelby Dakota. The OEM size is 225/70/15. I am no changing the original Shelby wheels. Looking for relatively sporty tires, for a truck, and would like some feedback.
Thx

What width is the wheel? I'm guessing its 7". Sadly, "sporty / performance" just dosn't exisit in this size range short of drag radials. My vote would be for Cooper Cobra GT's. Their site shows 245/60 fitting a 7" while being 3/4" shorter. I used 235/60 on my 7" Firebird wheels and they fit nicely. The tires rode and handled well enough for a cruiser.
Certain sizes like that run into the unfortunate problem of not having a lot of good choices anymore. Personally, if you're keeping the original wheels for looks at car shows, etc. I'd just put something on them to use for that and swap them for something else with better tire options when you're actually driving it and care about performance.
225/70R15 were the stock size on my 95 Caprice 9C1. They are an absolute mother to find nowadays. How bad would it be to go up to a 225/75R15? You can find those all day long. They are just a tiny bit taller.
I just went and looked. My Ranger wears a 265/70 15. It's not bad looking but may be taller than you want.
225/70-15 was actually the tire size for the late 2nd generation Trans-Am's with the WS6 package. Those looking for an original/period look buy the BFG Comp TA's, which are pretty expensive for a tire that hasn't changed in 30+years. Otherwise there's not much available in that size these days other than the General Altimax and couple of Kumho "touring" tires.
Since it's on a truck, maybe look into a taller tire in a size that's easier to find.

In reply to Gearheadotaku:The truck has 245/60/15 Yokohama Avid STs. I have had them on for many years, which is why the need replacing. The are a bit too wide as the rib a bit up front at full lock and the look squeezed on the factory 6.5 inch wide wheel.
In reply to bmw88rider:Yup, or a General Grabber HTS. I could go with, as already suggested, a 225/75/15 and deal with taller sidewall. Last summer, 225/70/15. Grand Touring tires were available. Not any more.
Some people mentioned bf goodrich radial ta, don't know if those people have driven a car on those tires but they are terrible. I've had them on two different cars (bought them once not knowing, another car came with them, I wouldn't buy them twice) they ride nice quiet and smooth but have horrible wet traction and dry isn't good either. I vote a shorter wider tire
In reply to chiodos:That leaves me with competition tires, sport compact tires or the T/As. Probably going with a General Grabber or Cooper Cobra.
Wow, didn't expect a 6.5 wide wheel. Well, the Cobra GT comes in lots of sizes and would still be my 1st choice. Slim down to a 235/60? Maybe 235/70?
In the stock size, the Firestone Destination LE 2 is probably as good as it's going to get. Probably a lot better than the ancient Radial T/A.
In reply to Moparman:
What is a sport compact tire?
Why not go with any of the good 205 width tires that are out there and get a free center of gravity lowering?
