Well, that went well. My son bought a shift linkage kit for his 1986 GTi and we installed it. (Heim style joints to replace stock bushing and linkage. Required drilling, grinding, ect.) Estimated time from manufacture was 2 hours. We have almost 8 hours in it before it finally rolled out the door. Whew... Good thing I do not do that for a living. At least the shifting is precise now.

Which kit did you buy? I thought they were supposed to be plug and play...

They are adjustment sensitive for sure with the heim kits. They are a drastic improvement over the Rube Goldberg-esque setup VW engineered though. Glad you got it all sorted! We need obligatory pictures of the Vdub in question.
He bought this:
And I am not knocking the manufacture. (USRT) I will admit, we did not know what we were doing. (We took it apart without measuring things. ) Having said that, if I were to do it again I would tack weld the bolts to the appropriate linkage to simplify the installation. Now that it is done the shifter has a very positive feel. Almost clicks into place for each gear.

That was the same one a friend of mine installed on his scirocco, I never got to drive it to see how it felt, but he was certainly happy with it.
Yep, had one in the last MK2 Jetta I built. Great linkage. God I miss that car, but that was 5 years ago and I promised myself I wouldn't go down the VW Rabbit Hole (pun intended) again. With that said, next summer we will be replacing our faithful Mazda 5 and my wife wants a white 6MT GTI with Tartan cloth seats. Who am I to argue with that??
I had that companies linkage in my old MKI GTI and loved it; well engineered.
Love USRT's stuff the positive engagement feel of their kit even gave the MKIII an excellent feel. I almost miss the feeling of my previous VWs from time to time.
