I was picturing a Pirelli World Challenge type event with 40 to 50 entrants.

Break them up into 4 heats of 12 or so cars, heat races would be half an hour to forty minutes.

The top four finishers from each heat would go straight to the main event. The fast losers get to go to a Last Chance Qualifier of 20 cars. Then the main event would have 20 cars on the grid for an hour-long Race.

The other miscellaneous racers would have their half hour sprints in between the heat races.

Edit: I had an idea that would make the LCQ heat mire interesting. Racers that DNF in a heat race could buy their way into the LCQ by swapping points for a grid position (assuming they have enough points, and can fix the car). That would protect front running teams from bad luck without being a free pass. Also if someone DNFs in a heat because someone punted them, the officials can take points from the offending team to put the punted team into the LCQ. If the offenders qualified for the main, or LCQ, they can still proceed as normal, except for the lost points.

I've seen plenty tempers flare after a 10 lap heat.

Interesting Idea. If any of you guys have not seen AMA Supercross, I HIGHLY recommend doing so. It is great racing from bell to bell with little time for the riders to take a lap off. One thing I wish supercross did was award a point or two for the heat race winners. I think it would make it more interesting. In auto racing, you may not need to do so and could get away with awarding grid positions.
