I'm thinking of condensing. I have been spreading money and time over a number of projects. I have currently 2013 Mazda 2 (DD), 92 Safari V8 rwd (failed 2016 challenge attempt, future tow rig/mobile track-side hotel room), 75 Corvette (currently unfinished on jack stands in a cold garage), and 1983 Rabbit Gti (former IT car, current track toy/autocrosser).
Thinking of moving on from the VW. Why? Glad you asked. You did ask didn't you?
It's old. The cage is partially bolt in/welded hybrid. Has some rust, but nothing real bad. And, chasing CIS issues is so 1998.
And, I have the 2. It's as close to a Rabbit as any modern car could be. It's as fun to drive but modern, with a stiffer body, and I think a better handling base to work from. So I would make it dual purpose DD/toy. I'm always impressed by modern cars that are as quick as a purpose built track cars. And they have modern things like power steering and a/c.
I've done the dual purpose before and said I wouldn't again, but that was an 81 Scirocco S that was loud, harsh, and stiff. Can the 2 work for time trials like COMSCC and not kill me on the street? Not full B-spec but brakes and suspension, maybe a diff (is one made?), good tires.
I also have the Vette to complete and the van to finish (which is close).
Thoughts?

I would think that you could dual purpose the 2 as long as you do track days for fun. There are tons of people that bring their DD's to COM events. I also run with COM but quickly discovered I wanted to chase my friends and quickly went down the fully prepared track car rabbit hole. I am the type of person that when I start doing something and find I enjoy it, will quickly jump in with both feet. So consequently I was unable to just do one or two events a year with my fun car, I had to do as many per year as I could afford and find time for. With this type of personality I had to have whatever goodies would make me faster and safer. I miss being able to drive my car on the street but often wonder if I could have had as much fun if I had kept the car more street oriented. So now that I've rambled on, if you keep the 2 streetable and just do the least amount you need to track it, think better pads/fluids for track days and maybe a harness bar and belts you would have all the fun you need on the track and minimal amount of harshness on the street. Or if you are like me and can't do anything half way, just finish the Vette and have that as a track toy. Have you been to any COM events lately?
In reply to imgon:
Haven't been to a COM event since 98 (Mont Tremblant).
I don't need to win anything. I want to drive and have a good time. Improving me.
As for the Vette, it would cost too much to make handle and brake well. Strictly street with occasional autocross.
