I just got a release from our friends at the Austin Hatcher Foundation, and I'll post it below. This is a bit personal to us because Austin's parents have been in the magazine before--we have featured a few of Jim Osborn's World Challenge cars over the years. I get to meet a lot of people each year, and these people have always been just so nice--like Bob Tunnell Nice.

Sadly, Austin is no longer with us, and the whole thing is rather tragic: http://www.hatcherfoundation.org/whoweare.php

At least something good is being done in his memory:

THE AUSTIN HATCHER FOUNDATION & DRIVERS FROM THE AMERICAN LE MANS SERIES VISIT NATIONWIDE CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

Columbus, OH: Thursday, August 2nd, the Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer and professional drivers from the American Le Mans Series will thrill and excite children at Nationwide Children’s Hospital for a much-needed distraction and escape of everyday realities of pediatric cancer and diseases.

Professional race car drivers Bryan Sellers and Wolf Hetzler from Falken Tire Racing will spend time with children and their families building pinewood derby cars as part of “Fueling Potential: Racing to Win” program.

“It is always a pleasure for me to visit the kids in the hospital,” said Wolf Henzler. “To be in a hospital as a kid is not an easy thing for them, for sure. It makes me happy when I can see a smile in their faces. Then I know they forget for a moment where they are and why.”

The Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer’s mission is to erase the effects of pediatric cancer and optimize each child’s quality of life through essential specialized intervention beginning at the time of diagnosis and continuing throughout survivorship. The Foundation provides services to children with cancer, as well as their families, in association with Pediatric Oncology centers and through the Foundation's cancer care center, Hatch’s House of Hope. The Foundation provides all services at no cost to the families. Services are funded solely by the generous donations of supporters. For more information, visit www.hatcherfoundation.org.

“Fueling Potential: Racing to Win” Campaign: In 2012, the Austin Hatcher Foundation is continuing its partnership with the American Le Mans Series by kicking off a new “Fueling Potential: Racing to Win” Campaign to help pediatric cancer patients and their families. “Fueling Potential: Racing to Win” is uniquely designed to provide families affected by pediatric cancer with the emotional and educational “Fuel” to ensure that each family member reaches their maximum potential as cancer survivors and ultimately “Win Life’s Race.”

That is a heartbreaking story.

I am so sad.. . My son had PPHN when he was born and we almost lost him. 12 weeks in NICU. I saw things in there that would make you want to crawl into a corner and cry one moment and then the next moment you wanted to jump for joy as a life was saved.

What you are doing is a heroic thing. I wish I had more to give than words of encouragement but at the moment it is all I have. Alas Austin is not here to see you but I like to think that there is a reason for everything and the big guy had plans for him. Austin will be proud. I would like to think that some how the big guy knew that they could make a difference for many many kids and this was the path needed to have you make that difference.
