I just got my stump grinder fixed and need to find a cheap way to get my name out there for some side work.
I have a good job but race cars take all available monies and I'd like to start doing a job or two a week in the afternoons. Any suggestions from the collective?
stumpy's grinding, nothing will leave you with a gaping dugout that you're wanting filled faster.
double entendres, use them whenever possible in your marketing
See if hardware stores or big box stores in your area have bulletin boards where you can post information about yourself - people are going to those stores to buy chainsaws or axes, and may need your services.
Call around to tree services to see if they could use you as a subcontractor. Chances are they already have subs they work with (or do it themselves) but you never know, they may need more resources.

Register with google places, bing places, yahoo places, kudzu and other free stuff like that as well as posting an ad on Craigslist. Make up a cheapie website to list on those sites with a hosting service like 1and1.com
Before you know it, your website will come up at the top of google searches and your phone will start ringing.
That's what I did with my racquet stringing biz and it worked brilliantly.
I don't see nothin' wrong, with a little "Stump N' Grind."
In reply to Gimp: that's great!
I have relatives who own "Eager Beaver Tree" business. Quite successful
Thanks all, much appreciate the help!
Print cards. Leave them everywhere.
Where are you located? Maybe some GRM people could use you.
Other than that, Craigslist?
Reminds me of the time Camel Towing tried to repo a car off my lot.
Facebook is free advertising. Have friends "like" your business and have them share your status.
I could use to have 3 stumps ground down but I see the 5 hours between us as an issue.

While I was mowing my yard, a guy walked up to me from my backyard. I was a little startled but he said he was grinding a stump at one of my neighbors and he offered to grind the maple stump left in my yard. I asked him a price and he offered $60 or so and I jumped. He walked the over with the machine and was done an hour later.
My point is every time you're out grinding, find anyone else with a stump and offer them your services. I thought it was going to be a couple hundred dollars and never looked into it.
As for goofier and memorable names, coming out of KY, I am sure you are familiar with Cox Smokers
Those ads that run along the top/sides/bottom of the paper place mats in local diners and fish and chips places around here are really effective for getting the word out locally. Easy to tear off and pocket for later. I had two trees cut down and chopped up by a guy that had a small business card sized place mat advertisement.
Especially good for local work.
Luck !
