Shameless plug but take a look at this. Skip ahead to about the 8 min mark. the last lap was great fun with Sauce, Argo and I. This keeps our skills reasonably sharp.

Dirt Rally looks awesome! New plan:
1) Give up on oculus.
2) Install Win 7 on my Macbook Pro.
3) Buy a cheap Logitech Momo Wheel on Ebay.
4) Try out Live for Speed / Dirt Rally / rFactor

I didn't reply to this right away, but I was thinking about this while I was at the Kart track last night. Whatever goes on in my brain is hard to describe; but I get most of the same feelings when attacking a course, regardless of input method or viewpoint. Video games, real life, it all seems to work the same way for me. I guess because I'm not thinking about the input method and more about the result? Is that weird?

That's good to know, and I'd imagine it would really bug me. I'll have to give one of the retail versions a try when they come out.

Actually thinking about it, there is still a lot of benefit to be had, even if you are using a controller. For the sims that have laser scanned tracks, you can definitely learn course layout and good race lines without needing a wheel or pedals. But I guess more muscle memory stuff is better with that kind of setup. I learned to heel and toe on a sim for example. It translated easily into real life for me.
In 2011 I bought an xbox 360 and Forza for the sole reason that they had Sebring and I had a Chumpcar race coming up there. I found the long-discontinued MS force feedback wheel on ebay. Honestly, it's fine for learning the track.
We built a real iRacing rig and I found the entire iRacing experience to be frustrating, buggy, and kludgy. Once I finally had it working, I discovered I had to buy Barber. The wheel lost calibration all the time. Then that bill shows up every month, which hurts when you don't do it frequently. If you're into sim racing, it's the best and you deal with PC-kludgyness. I found the Miata about damn uncontrollable with the stock setup. I think the edge in iRacing is in competition -- people that compete are like-minded and serious.
The xbox always just works, but you have to scrounge to find a decent force feedback wheel and pedal set for 360.
Having never been to Sebring, it was a huge help to learn the track. I was happy with the accuracy and had a lot more confidence diving into T1, and skating around through T17...for about the price of an HPDE.

Man i really need to get back into that, looks like lots of fun! I've been doing a bunch of PC stuff lately, mostly dirt rally but i miss good ol' wheel to wheel action.
For DiRT Rally you really do need some decent PC specs, specifically video cards. I had an old GTX 550 Ti 2gb for a while and it could sortof handle a bunch of games, but it just can't do Dirt Rally in the rain. Even ultra low settings and card overclocked to the max it just can't do it. On sunny stages i can do low to medium settings fine, but that's a decent part of the game i can't even play until the new video card shows up
In GT6 the go to was the bumper cam. It provided the best sense of position on the road and in traffic.
I've moved to Project Cars on the PS4. It has an adjustable FOV and also provides a helmet cam that auto looks through the corners. My preference is the cockpit cam with wheel and driver removed.
I have feelings on iRacing, they aren't very positive... But there are some good things about it (online reputation).
I think any time you race against people who have a skill level that challenge you, it will much more exciting and enjoyable than playing a "career mode".
Who has a Oculus setup? New egg is showing it for $58.60 what else would you need? this interests me.
That's not the right/real Oculus Rift. The Oculus is $600 and doesn't use a smartphone.

It's only pre-order at this point.
I can't imagine not having a 3 screen setup.
This was my old setup, just sold the Fanatec chair/pedal/wheel setup, hadn't been playing much at all lately since everything is in flux. Here is a pic of 3 27" monitor setup at my old apartment. My dad playing.
Tl;dr, but I know one thing- if you play forza motor sports they grant the easy button to those with a wheel and a clutch setup. I got a wheel and my lap times improved, but I was easily ten to twenty seconds slower than the slowest clutch pedal guys. They cheat using the clutch to reduce engine power around a corner, ensuring no wheel slip at all. It's like tract moon control without the penalty.
The other thing that pissed me off was good tunes. It's amazing how they took a game that was supposed to be realistic, and made the tuning so bass ackwards. Seriously. Want that MR2 to stop getting squirrelly at any speed? Simply take away ALL of the rebound in the shocks. Literally, just make them "0". Also, tired of having a car that burns rubber in any gear? Simply turn down all the LSD settings to "5". This was in forza motor sports 4. I've played five, and the cars feel like they were on tires made of wood. Thus, I have been, and always will be, a Gran Turismo fan. GTFTMFW.

iRacing.
Graphics aren't the best compared to Asseto Corsa and a few others, but the physics seem more real.
Even with the Monster video card I had in there, I couldn't run AC at full tilt on 3 monitors without it dropping to terrible frame rates. At this point though I'm sure there are better.
Once I'm more settled I'll build another setup with better stuff. The guts of the computer are from 2010, I just slapped a big video card, RAM and power supply in it.
If you don't want to drop frame rates with a triple monitor setup:

And forget the arcade game Forza for Xbox 360... go with Race Pro, or get an Xbox one and Project Cars... Forza is an import parts tuner and painter simulator game with not so great driving experience compared to actual race sims. Race Pro and Project cars is from Sim Bin/ex-Sim Bin staff (the team behind GTR2)... so they know a thing or two about Sim racing and driving experience...
