Just got a Logitech G25 wheel/pedal/shifter set, and it rocks. It came with a demo of rFactor, which is alright, and I downloaded Live for Speed, which I think is better, but what I'm really looking for is something along the lines of Forza or Gran Turismo.
Are there any racing sim type games for PC that have more of the car buying, parts-swapping feel of the console sims?
Also, it seems like brake and throttle are on the same axis... I'm hoping I can seperate those, as it means I can't heel-toe.
rFactor has a steeper learning curve than the console based games you mentioned, I've been using it for about two weeks now and have just started to really enjoy the program.
There are a rediculous number of real world tracks available for download, even the smaller regional tracks. That's something you're not going to find with the console games.

^great source of addons/cars/tracks and information on the game, quite a lot better than the official site.
rFactor is HUGELY hit or miss on quality though.
Actually I liked the Porsche Carrera Cup mod and not much else :P
Combined axis should be able to be turned off with the wheels drivers. I would suggest using drivers from http://www.wingmanteam.com/
I belive you also need to flip a switch in the controller menu of LFS, not sure about others.
I think its my duty as an LFS fan boy to urge you to stick with that one, it may not have the upgrades and fanciness of the GT series... But in driving it absolutely BLOWS gran turismo out of the water.
Organized by level of simulation (most realistic at the top). To more accurately compare the level of realism, a scale 1-10, 10 being real life and 1 being like Spy Hunter the arcade where you just chose a lane.
iRacing, 9.999~ :)
GTR 2, 8-9
GT Legends, 8-9
GTR, 7-8
rFactor, 7
Forza, 5
Grand Turismo, 5
Need For Speed, 4
Grand Theft Auto (3, and Vice City), 2-3
Grand Theft Auto 4, -50 for being completely gay in so many ways.
rFactor: Download the Historic GT (requires GTL disk) mod and a couple tracks from the All-Stars list (Mid-Ohio or Brands Hatch).
The 73 3.0 RSR, Lotus Elite and Abarth are simply awesome.
What about Richard Burns Rally? It's my personal favorite sim. I don't know where I'd stick it on your list, but it's definitely more realistic than the GTs and Forzas of the world. There's 3rd party multiplayer support for it as well, but it's kind of a hack.

The rFactor rating is a little low - GTR2 is very, very good but during network/internet gameplay rFactor is much better at collision detection, bandwidth management and so on. It has better graphics and actually has better road feel if you use mods that can take advantage of the reelfeel plugin too. The trouble with it is... out of the box its ugly and boring and it isn't always easy to get it setup correctly. It takes 3GB of downloads to get right.
THe Historic mod is awesome - its basically embedding GTL into rFactor and produced by professional game developers from the ground up to mimic the bias tires, and all the odd-quirky handling of the swing-axles, torsion bars, etc. It is truely enjoyable. Give it a try.... I am building a server to host for a few friends once a week. Email me and I'll add you to the list of invitees.
Sorry, it's not the physics or the racing that I feel is lacking in LFS, it's the driving, saving up, and buying new cars and mods.
I really, really like that in Forza I can buy a USDM 240SX and do an SR20 swap to it. That's the kind of thing I miss so far in the PC sim racing universe.
I understand there's a "Cruise" mod for LFS that's something along those lines?
I rather liked Grand Touring Legends - complete with cool 60s cars.

Ehh not really. There are no official mods for the game, but the servers can run little scrips. Things like giving drift scores and what not.
Cruise servers aren't much of a mod... just a rule set where you cannot drive above some absurdly low speed limit, and some server side scrips to enforce it, and often have admins with police skins who enforce rules...At least I think, I try to stay FAR away from cruise servers because the last thing I want from a racing game is to not be allowed to drive fast.

Ah, okay. THe little bit I could find was just that you had to do stuff to earn "money" to buy cars. That aspect intrigued me.

You know what, you may be right....
IIRC everytime you join some of the servers you are limited to basic cars. The longer you stay on driving slow the more fast cars you earn to drive slow in.
(I don't know if you can tell, but I am not a fan :P )
they are just cars that are available on every other server though.

What I think this all boils down to is if I want to play Forza, I should just go play Forza, lol. If I want to race, than rFactor, LFS, or iRacing are the way to go.
