That's a legit ZAV if there ever was one! Just needs an HMG on the roof.

I'll bet the kids were pissed when the school bought that thing, no more snow days.

My mom said her school bus (rural Iowa in the early 50's) was a Jeep with an extended rear and bench seats. She said the regular buses couldn't get back to most of the farms. Kinda interesting that those conversions aren't around anymore.

Why all the excitement over the NAPCO 4WD?

Because its a 4WD Mercury short bus. Probablythe only one in existence.

That's cool.

I kicked around the idea of doing 4WD on mine but figured towing the Samurai would be cheaper.

NAPCO was an interesting company. They were based in Minneapolis, and if I recall correctly was started by a man who ran a junkyard. They did a lot of 4wd conversions for various makes and models up until the manufacturers started to build them from the factory. These days, any authentic NAPCO conversion is pretty collectible; I imagine there were very few school buses ever built.
