how about a Buick Regal GS? 3.8 Supercharged, seats 5.
The Regal GS weights about 3500 lbs and runs high 14s in the 1/4 mile stock. It weights about as much as some of the other Volvos etc that were suggested. Hell a WRX weights 3100lbs. They made 240 hp and 280 tq and will pull down close to 30mpg on the highway. With minor mods such as a smaller pulley, intake, reflash and U bend delete they will run in the mid 13s if you can get traction. Weak point is the transmission and floaty suspension if you plan on autocrossing or any track use. Comfy and quick.
I had a 200k mile 98 Park Ave Ultra (same motor) with a -1 size pulley and a Home Depot intake that ran 15.5 in the 1/4 mile. I got as good as 31 mpg highway driving very carefully and would routinely get 28 mpg highway. Only real problem I had was the transmission went around 200k. I replaced that and sold it at 210k miles for the same amount I bought ($1500) it for when it had 180k miles.
I would give them two thumbs up as a sleeper DD that you never plan on competing in. Oh and you can find them from around $2k and up.
