Looking at starter specs for a small block chevy, I noticed some have dual hole patterns for mounting, and something about flywheel tooth count.
Question: Are there different diameter (stock-ish) flywheels for manual transmissions on the SBC?
This may help me get the over all height short enough to fit in a TR4 engine bay
Yes. But i think its primarily auto vs manual for size.
This is info just dragged out of the back of my brain. There are two diameters of flywheels for the early two piece rear seal block. The starter bolts are not for different diameter flywheels. The early ones had two bolts straight across, and the later ones have the holes offset for better control of the starter location. I think all of the full circle rear seal blocks have the offset bolts. I'm not sure if there are two sizes of flywheel for them- I'd bet there is a car sized one, and a truck sized one.
Maybe race stuff- Here is a terribly expensive, super cool answer:

There's 168 tooth flywheels and 153 tooth flywheels. The straight pattern is for 168, the offset is for 153.
I think...

I have the offset bolt pattern on my '77 C10, and I'm pretty sure I bought a 168 tooth flex plate for it.

10.5" and 11". Your bellhousing may require the 10.5". I played mix and match flywheel/clutch/bellhousing on my '72 Nova 350. It was frustrating but I eventually found the right combo.

Other way around, 168 is offset. Some of the aftermarket mini starters just have two patterns in a row and always use the 153 tooth holes.
A SBC needs a flywheel? I'd think there would be enough rotating mass there as is...
Would anyone know in what year the 153-168 change took place? I have an early 327 small block and can't figure out what flywheel, started, pressure place should be used.

It's an application specific thing, not year. I think some bellhousings don't have room for the bigger one, so watch out for that.
