I have thought for quite awhile that if someone made a fairly easy and inexpensive swap kit for the RX8 it would have tons of potential as long as the swapped in engine was some amount of fun (forced induction or V8 or whatever). Tons of RX8's around that the engine gave up at 100k.
Problem is that nobody wants to pay real money for a swap kit for a car that has no real value.
That said, I was talking to someone about the Jaguar/Lincoln V6 as a swap on the NC earlier this week. That would probably translate to the RX8 pretty easily.
I still like that RX8 with the ford 300 I6 sticking out of the engine bay that was for sale a while back.
The V8 Roadster people have an LS1 kit including the CAN solution for the RX-8. They aren't cheap, like Keith said.

Have you driven a Ford... lately?
Apples and tomatoes, but I was actually somewhat impressed by the 1.5l Fusion that I drove. 1.5l engine powering a 4000lb tank. It didn't suck, and it didn't act like it was struggling either. The mind-blower is that the intercooler is built into the intake manifold and it uses regular engine coolant, not a separate coolant circuit, so it seems to be more of an intake temperature regulation device than a charge cooler.
In reply to TVR Scott :
"Impressed" in that I didn't nearly expect an engine smaller than some motorcycles to haul around that tank like it did.
No, it wasn't "fast", but there really isn't anything mass-market that I'd consider "fast". The butt dyno rated it around what an old 2.5l Milan felt like to drive, which was also a smaller car.
