I don't see any evidence that there was an engine failure, just a rattling sound in a small RPM window, which could be any number of things.
A picture of oil, which says nothing - all oil looks like that.

Good point. When the original engine suffered from rattling/knocking, the cause became very obvious and not that hard to document. Non-stock windows in the block tend to help with that.

My first M3 was a 1995 that I bought in 2002. It'd nearly be 30 years old now. I still really like that platform and Rodan isn't doing me any favors posting up about his E36 Touring. I wouldn't mind having one of those with the S52 motor in it as a DD.

There is/was a 318ti with an S52 for sale locally. I think that would be close to perfect if the conversion was done properly. But I don't think I want to find out.
I suspect a lot of E36s here have succumbed to the salt as I barely see any for sale.
I hear S197s are pretty corrosion resistant and probably new enough for the parts supply to not have imploded completely.

Agreed, I see track-prepped E36s for sale on BMW-related groups pretty frequently.

I'd love an E30 wagon with an S52. The normal 2-door E30 I S52 swapped put down 240/240 on the dyno. That car was a riot..........until the headgasket popped. I was so disappointed I had a friend help me do a new headgasket and then parted the car out.

Mine made 240 too. I also had to fix the head gasket, it's just a thing on them once the mileage gets up there and if they're used on the track. A hint of overheating and the head gasket is fried
Well, someone took his wife to a spa and forgot that the auction on that Mini was ending.
I've got a slight change of plans though - after my knee issue derailed the WRX purchase, I think I'm going to make my way down to Duncan Imports sometime in the New Year and check out their Minis. That might be a much cheaper way to determine if I'm Mini-compatible than relying on memories of the ones that I owned 25 years ago.
Good thing about me planning is that once I come up with a plan, I stick with i.... Hey look what the squirrel dragged in:
Ah well, I might throw a couple of bids in after all.

That's awesome. I've autocrossed a Mini twice and it was hysterical fun.
I vintage race against Minis and they are the same style as my 1200; chuck it in and balance it all on the throttle.

The nice thing about that car is that it's already heavily modified so I wouldn't berkeley up a nice original 60s Mini.

They had pretty bad rust problems here. The E46s are a little better, they don't lose rockers and quarters the was E36s do, but for some reason the E46 trunk corroded heavily.

Where's here? I had mine in Boston and neither it, nor any of my friends cars had rust issues. In Colorado rust isn't really a thing...

He has the title but the interior is completely striped so not likely what you want.
He vintage raced it for near 30 years; had the motor out to build up a new engine, then went through a rough patch so it never went back together. He has all his notes.
He says 6K is his bottom line but I'm sure he'd take a smidgen less.
At that price I was tempted to buy it, build a stockish motor, put the interior back in it and make a track day car out of it. The Mustang deal popped up so I went with that.
