Because of that Expedition Portal 25 year import article. I'm semi-serious about this.
Came across something today that blew my mind.
How in the world did i not know this thing existed?

Not legal for import, but i want one so badly.

Oh god i need this.
You suck for planting that seed in my head.

I don't think i've ever wanted anything so badly before. I'm a little mad i found it because i can't have it for another 8 years.

Try kijiji in British Columbia. They get lots of JDM stuff there.

Yeah i already found one for sale, and relatively affordable. Just not legal to import, not old enough.
That PajEvo sounds cool, but nothing will change the fact that its built by Mitsu
Do they have any Nissan Patrols up there in Cannuckistan? They were available in gas and diesel, RHD & LHD. Engine parts are available in the US, some Nissan forklifts, and I think UD trucks used the same engine.
Lots of weird wrong side drive stuff in BC. So common it's not even weird anymore.

I could buy it for you and drive it around. Live vicariously eh?
I'm actually thinking of buying that. I just earned a metric berkeley-ton of overtime...

I will hate you forever. AND try to become your best friend in unflattering ways.

Patrols, Pajeros, Prados, and diesel Land Cruisers are on my list of things i'm searching for.
I've only ever seen one Patrol, and it belonged to a Datsun freak.
You guys are all nucking futz to want that clattery, rough, slow, stinky, trucky stuff.

Except in these scenarios they're more powerful, reliable, and efficient than their gas brethren.
There are a few Patrols in Canada, but not many. I sold mine in Australia a year ago, and am lusting after another. The early GQ Patrols are now legal to be imported to the US, which has me seriously considering it. Apparently Columbia is a treasure-trove of well-maintained Patrols - I just asked on another forum for the best place to search for LHD versions, and this is what I was told.
Quite a number of Aussies have been putting Duramax conversions into a Patrol - this would have to be the best combination ever - and there's kits available to do it yourself as well. Much want!
man I am so happy I don't get the whole truck/SUV thing....
good for me... cause they look like they'd be expensive to own/repair
They arent bad. Our Jeeps take the cheapest tires out of our fleet, by a long shot, and running on 87 octane gas means operating costs arent much higher either.
So the 25 year rule still stands? Or is it just for japanese cars not already crash tested in America. My girlfriend and her dad imported a 96 lumina no problem that I tagged and sold but I want something more japanese, and like you have scoured kijiji and Craigslist but would like to know the specifics... a one way flight to visit her family and drive back in old japanese goodness would be a bucket of fun

You can import a list of cars at any time as long as it was originally sold in Canadian and Canadians can import US market cars any time as well. There are some exceptions, I'm looking at you Lotus. The lusted after cars are ones that were never for sale in North America so they must be 15 years old to come to Canada and 25 years old to go to the US.
I have been seriously considering a few myself, eg. Euro spec E36 M3 and Alpina Touring with manual trans, these are both LHD in Japan.

25 year rule still stands specifically for vehicles never sold in the US.

In reply to Swank Force One:
But I could still pick up a 323gtx or a st195 alltrac? Maybe an early wrx or do they consider packages we never got in merica too?

Any 323GTX that you could bring over, would be legal under the 25 year rule anyways.
But yes, an ST185, as long as north american spec, should be easy to bring over. I think.

BC is the best place for these Japanese market vehicles. Alberta is probably second.
Try a JDM search on BC Kijiji
