Rustoleum wouldn't make a good primer for other paints. Did they use a sealant or primer before spraying "real" car paint?
I've gone the roll on paint job route with a Triumph Spitfire and the results are pretty impressive. You get very good at wet sanding but it's a forgiving process. I used Tremclad paint and it took about 7 coats before I was done. I was able to go back and fix some of my original body work. I picked up another can of Tremclad and the colours matched up exactly. The nice thing is you can get spray bombs, for smaller parts and hard to reach areas, that match the rest of the paint. My paint job is miles from show winning but it's better than a cheap spray job and there was nowhere near the mess. My technique improved the more I painted. I plan to go back and fix some of the rougher spots as my schedule allows. Try doing that with a typical paint job.
Does the local vo-tech offer painting/bodywork in an adult education class? That might be the way to go...
I'm sure it was stated elsewhere, but don't be afraid to practice on a junk hood, etc.
