Audi five cylinder with booooooooooooooooooost.
I'd find a Fairmont k-member and swap in a 200 inline 6, then find an Aussie crossflow head and add boost.

If it's an FFR donor, it won't be much of a roller.

No cause mucho $$$$ and fun to find.
However, the 1 UZ is dirt cheap and if you can live with the auto, this can be done for poco dinero. AND it would piss off the Mus-tards to no end.

This.
But wouldn't the Aussie crossflow really push the budget?

I dunno, I'm good buddies with Lawrence of Aussie Cars Ltd, so I can probably get one pretty cheap, but I've also heard that the prices have come way down. I've seen a few in the wild.
Prices started to come down on the aussie crossflow head because classic inlines released a 2 peice aluminum intake and head combo. They are now nla so expect prices to climb back up.

It just so happens that I have the motor out of my wrecked 03 9-5 Aero, along with the whole car. $100 and its yours.

I hate/love you.... I need to get rid of my brothers Escort that's littering the yard, and I should have the room after that.

Could do a 1J then. If you buy a donor car at auction or find a CL seller that doesn't know what he has you can pick up a SC for a reasonable price.

Fixed that air cooled V8!
Or... find an outboard boat motor for a ripping 2-cycle!

If I blow up the 2JZ in the Rice Rod, 1UZ is the backup plan because hey it's a hot rod, needs a V8 right?
Yeah, I was also going to suggest a rotary. Although, those swampers look pretty cool....
Just bring it. How's that for my final answer?
It's summer, snowmobiles are cheap right now. Buy several, remove engines, couple them together, BRAAAAAAAP. Bonus points for a coupling method that lets them all keep their individual CVTs for maximum awful noises.
Whatever I could get my grubby hands on.
So currently a 250k mile, half dead 318 with an auto behind it.
And probably a junkyard turbo or two.
I predict it wouldn't live past my driveway.
Edit: a thought that just came to me is 2.4 turbo from a PT. Trans would be the sticking point I think, yoter trannys are pricey.
