I never really found that movie slow, it's only 106 minutes. Slow is The Godfather, that's like watching paint dry on a cold day slow, to me anyways.
You wanna talk about slow, I've started watching really old black and white drama's. Seven out of ten times I couldn't even tell you what the movie was about, my mind has already been through a million different scenarios by the time the plot develops.
That's what's happening to me right now. And don't berkelying ruin the ending for me!
Also, I am really appreciating the artistic screen shots that McQueen used. Wish he was still around. Oh well, I'll catch him on the flip side.

Well kinda. It's literally ending as I type. Ok ending I guess. Slow, but nonetheless, there was and hour and a half of non stop lemans engine sounds. Instant wood.

So you're complaining about a hour and a half of wonderful sounds? That's not slow, that's pleasure. To me the starting scenes were worth the movie all by themselves.
It works better when you watch it wearing your helmet and driving suit. And, yes, I have a witness.
I remember seeing Le Mans in the theater (yes I'm that old). I squeezed my girlfriend's hand too tight for the first starting bits. It was amazing at the time. Lots of chase cars and special camera cars were used.Now you can get the same shots using Go-Pro. We're just spoiled these days.

Not much of one, but it's worth it for the sights and sounds. I recently added the Blu-Ray to my collection.

The first showing in our area was in a brand new muti-screen theater complex, made to look somewhat like a resort hotel. The Porsche Club booked up the first night's showing of Le Mans and did a wine & cheese party for everyone with tickets at the theater before the showing. The proceeds from the wine and cheese party went to the local Humane Society.
That's one of the few times I've seen movie goers get so excited by what's actually on the screen, rather than in the back rows. Every time a Porsche got passed for the lead there were sighs and boos. But when a Porsche pulled out in front it sounded like a Nascar race when Dale Earnhart Jr. passes anyone.
You probably think Rendezvous is lame because there are no words.
Pulled my unopened LeMans VHS off the shelf because of this thread. I've been holding it for about 20 years. I can't get over how YOUNG McQueen looks in that movie. Hard to believe I was in fifth grade at the time...

The slow pace of 2001 and The Shining are Kubrickian awesomeness. Every shot is a portrait.
However, I have no idea what happened in Bullitt. That plot is so slow/disjointed it went right over my head. I haven't watched it in at least 15 years, so maybe I'll give it another crack.

Slow can be good. Shawshank. It can also be loooong. Lawrence of Arabia. How many panoramic sweeping vistas with camels walking across do we need?

Is the Shining really slow? I haven't watched that one in more than 20 years. I don't remember it being slow. I saw it the first time when I was in 4th grade or so and I thought it was scary, but not slow.
Lemans is good for the sights and sounds of the cars...not much else. That one is a bit slow if you are thinking about it like it is a regular movie. Bullit is just not a good movie as far as I can tell. McQueen seemed to be a cool guy who made some sucky assed movies, but they allowed him to play with some cool toys.
The reason why LeMans is slow is because it was a bit of a mess when it was made. All McQueen wanted to do was shoot cool scenes with cars (what a tragedy eh?) and the studio was getting a bit pissed about the lack of story (and the rapidly expanding budget). I think they eventually brought in a director to finish it and they kind of had to build a story around what they had.
Old movies vs new movies are kind of like the difference between classical music and a Katy Perry song. Classical has a lot more dynamic range, a Katy Perry songs sort of go from 80-100.
