My vision is that it be informal. Nobody has to be in the "class" unless they want to be. Use the proposed $80 and ??? TW rule and invite people to come meet, hang out, and form a community within the community. Crown a king amongst us.
I'm trying to come up with a name. Something with S. Snails. We all want to see the S car go. Help me out here.
Well, the general scientific name for snail species is gastropods so I guess it could be some variation of that.
GOFASTROMODS?
FASTNOMODS?
make a traveling trophy ala the Stanley Cup out of some huge diesel tractor trailer housing Turbo. Pass it on from year to year.
In reply to Ovid_and_Flem :
We do have something like that. Its called the blue jacket that gets passed off the the winner each year at the event,
The cam class idea does sound fun, but add in anything big and heavy would be fun. But from a build class, its pretty easy and you can build hardcore of pretty easy for the class and open up and bring out stuff that you really do not seem to many of at the event ever.
I can see cam s challenge cars being a Haven for C4 Corvettes.
CAMS=Cause All.Miatas Suck

The Gastropods is actually a great idea. A group to help us slowly out of our pre-Challenge shells.
I should really start a separate thread so as not to confuse this one.

Fwiw a gastropod without a shell is a mollusk. Perhaps a Sub sub glass for ghettocets
My vote is to keep it real simple and do hatchbacks. It keeps with the theme of specific types of vehicles, while having a very low barrier to entry. Someone could just do a honda civic and nitrous and be very succesful, or a madman could v8 swap a toyota starlet.
Yeah we're really overthinking this sub-class thing. If it hasn't been decided by the end of the Challenge, it probably never had enough momentum to actually happen.

Oh no. Here we go. This thread dies with an argument over what's a hatchback.
Corvettes are hatchbacks........

A Corvette can be anything with enough sawzall. Dream big.
CAM CT no weight restrictions works for me.
If you unzip the rear window of a Miata is it a hatchback?
What about a dead manufacturer/make division? Saab’s and Saturns, Oldsmobile’s, etc. plenty out there.
In reply to mazdeuce - Seth :
Which is why t-tops and pickups are more creative ideas than hatchbacks.
I've had some other legitimate ideas.
As air-cooled would quickly become a beetle class as there just aren't that many trabants out there and even fewer under $2k. I present...
<4cylinders.
Bring your motorcycle powered things, your geos, your suzukis, your rotaries, and if you're a brilliant madman, something battery powered.
I thought about a hybrid or electric subclass, but we're still likely 2-3 years away from that being as awesome as it should be.

Fair point. What if we 'go back to our roots' and have at least two competitors call each other out to pick the subclass?
That said, I think we do have a lot of momentum in this thread for the AM class and the cheap tire class. At the town hall we had an overwhelming vote in favor of a tire class, with details to be hammered out on the forum.
I'd definitely participate in a cheap tire class, I might participate in an american muscle class.
Somewhere, Comstock's shaking and he doesn't know why.

If it's a parking lot build and Stampie's bar is near by would that be a gastropub build?

Was there a reason why the tire class would be linked to a price, and not a treadwear? like 300+ or something to keep them in the at least 3 season range?
In reply to bluej :
Nothing other than the hillarity of trying to put down any real power thru rock hard bicycle tires
With the magazine sponsors I think a 200 tw class would be the preferred option. Any 200 tw drag tires?

I thought everything nitto makes is a 200TW drag tire...
Why not three tire designations (other than that it starts getting real SCCAish).
Unlimited (current ruleset)
200TW (street)
600TW (budget)
I would like to see CAM cars. They're underrepresented at the Challenge considering how available they are.
The tire thing would just be some sort of sub-award like the $1009 award. What was the highest placing car on non-race tires?
