Some dealers throw out fake ads then can't find the car when you show up. Yeah, I got sucked into one of these.
Notice the background and seasons. Sometimes they are way mismatched from current. I would call and confirm with a salesman that they have it because you are driving over.......oh no, somebody JUST bought it you say?
All of his other ebay sales are in front of the same building, appears to be the same time of year; all are Buy-It-Nows.
Be advised that Smithtown, NY is on the north shore of Long Island. Check for waterlines and sand.
That's the 3.5L V6 that was better used as a boat anchor. It made ~180hp and if that car will get 17mpg on the highway, downhill, engine off I'd be suprised.
Overall though, it's a tough, body on frame SUV. Expect electrical gremlins with that generation. AC compressors were weak, it is likely past due for a timing belt (5years or 60k miles is the change interval) and water pump.
Honestly, I'd say it's priced about what it's worth. $3500 would be max dollar on that critter.

wiki says 192hp, fwiw.
i've heard they're thirsty.

are you thinking of the Sportages? I thought the sorento was 20k at least.

i chuckled as well

Dont get me wrong, because im not a big fan of this motor for being-a-mechanic reasons, but if you're talking about performance it's not terrible. Its basically a 3.5L dohc 6g72 iirc. I just drove one in a contemporary sedona auto the other day and it wasnt terrible. It just didnt make power as high up as id like, considering the cylinder heads its wearing..
Ive put a timing belt on a 3.5 sorento and i didnt like it. Of course, you'll probably only have to do it once.

Do you mean loss leader?
I agree, there is nothing remarkable about the Sorrento that would make it worth any money. I have only driven one but it was terrible.

i THINK it's right. They were listed around 190-ish. felt like 120-ish in that truck.
In 2007 they put the 3.8L in, good for 262hp. And dropped the manual. I was getting excited there for a bit.
I imagine you could make a manual 3.8 somehow pretty easily since they're both Lambda engines, but I can't see it being worth it.
It is fairly routine other than the fact that the belt goes around 8 pullies instead of the more common 3-5.
If it is basically a dohc 6g mitsu motor as i believe it is, it reminds me of the semi-funny fact that for a long time you used to see a lot of broken 3000gts for sale because people had TRIED to do their own timing belts as preventative maintenance... and failed.

Completely different motors. The later 3.5 has some get up and go in the Hyundai Santa Fe (which didn't get it until 2010) The sorento, IMO, is a way better used car buy than the equivalent 3.5 Santa Fe. The 3.5 never worked well in the Santa Fe, and at least in Canada, the dealers stopped ordering them about halfway through the production run. Very crowded underhood. I've watched a t-belt change in an early Sorento. Seemed pretty routine...? The 3.5 Santa Fe 2002-2005.5 is tougher, and the 2.4 Santa Fe 2002-2005.5 is tougher than either.
That first gen Sante Fe was a real turd, and throw in the 3.5 on top of it and it became a bit...umm... useless. Did they ever find a hitch for the first gen 3.5 SF?
My brother did an engine change in one and said it was a total PITA, and a low mileage replacement was almost 3k :-/

Had a friend at work who had a 3000gts. He brought it in for a timing belt change and was quoted a price... apparently the shop didn't know what it was getting into and quoted a standard price.
When he went to pick it up, the mechanic was a bit flustered and told him to "never bring it back"
Reviving an old thread. There's an '03 Sorento in wholesale at work for $1000. 4wd, auto, 123k, 3.5, dirty but looks solid. My friends and I are doing our own version of a cheap truck challenge ($1500 max, have to buy it from our job's wholesale lot, etc) and I thought this might work. I figured I'd do some basic maintenance, timing belt, and some slightly bigger A/T tires on the awesome OEM steelies, it would work pretty well on some VA fire roads and mountain trails. Anyone have anything further to add other than what's been mentioned?
