320i swaps were common, e30 m3 swaps happened as well but are expensive. You can drop it in but it isn't just a perfect fit. You'll need to fab up some things for sure.
So, what's the best swap candidate then? Or, is the stock engine the best choice?

I had about 100 hp and it was a blast. Rather than do a swap, make sure you get a 320 5 speed and a LSD rear end. Simple bolt ons and have fun.

If you HAD to swap, SR20det. I've had a few of them in Nissans and in that little thing it would be awesome. Or maybe a TII Rx7 with a streetport.

I'll be finding out how "afro engineering" a m42 for boost on a budget goes.....SR20det engines aren't that great, there are many better ones.

SR's are pretty great for what they do I have had 300+ whp FWD and RWD in them and never had a hiccup for years. Timing chain was bulletproof and with a good tune the stock headgasket didn't complain either. What experience do you have with them that gives you that opinion?

CA18DET swaps are cheaper and slighty smaller and with a few tweaks can be brought to 200 whp as well.

Other than helping change out three sr20's killed by admittedly, stupidity of the owner.....the KA is a better engine in the long run....price wise and reliability wise. In the 240sx case though, they just aren't mad-tyte jdm.

Also note, I was offered a running red top sr for what I bought the e30 m42 setup for from old tin(which prevented at least one more 2002 swap ) I declined due to the hassle of it, and I still think the m42 has potential.

Woody,

Welcome to an addiction that knows no end. I have an ongoing project that is coming together one tangent at a time.

The BMW club Auto cross offerings in Southern California gives us access to a number of sites that provide outstanding events. Mr. Carlson even drives at the Qualcom events.

The early 2002's, round tail, are lighter by up to 200lbs. But....

Everyone ends up wanting a 5 speed, LSD, 15x7 rims and Recaro seats.

I would look for a 320is, everything is already there and the rims fit without flares.

But if a 2002 is your only choice you have been warned. I would spend the effort and time to locate a 1972 tii and keep it stock. I look forward to watching your efforts.

I was a member for several years and autocrossed with the local chapter (in a wrx, lol). There are some nice benefits to membership, though the magazine is basically a giant advertisement, lol.

I disagree about the ka being a better choice. No oil squirters no factory metal hg. I could rant about how many blown up ka turbos I have since in the last 12 years or so I've been doing Nissan's.

I'd sooner wipe my ass with Roundel than read it

And it's still better than Sportscar.

Roundel is probably softer, too...

I loathe Roundel. I accidentally read the letters to the editor section once and will never make that mistake again. There are about four pages worth reading every month. The tech section. Besides that its a "look at how great BMW's are and how great we are for owning one". I was a member for a year and dropped for that reason. That magazine is why people think that those who own a BMW are dickheads. (I own a '95 M3 and am a dickhead according to my wife).

"mmmm I just got my X6 and l lurrve the way it fondles my genitals like no other vehicle on the road. The insert R&T gushing here is second to none. I will never buy another vehicle ever ever in the world."

Really wish I'd had the chance to visit one of their track events or autocrosses, because I have heard nothing but good things about them.

I used to be a BMWCCA member for a few years when i had a BMW, and thought Roundel was well put together magazine. But the letters section was supremely amusing. It was all about things like "the local dealer used a dirty towel to dry my car when he washed it", to the ever popular "I'm really upset that my new (insert BMW model here) only has a cup holder in (insert favorite location here), and then it hits my leg when I contort into some unfathomable position." They're always whinning about something so unimportant. I clearly remember one person complaining that a rock chipped his paint and he wanted BMW to buy his car back. If he spent that much money on a car it shouldn't get rock chips. Very humorous. Seemed to be serious, but always wondered if he (or she, can't remember) really was.

There is however some good info in the magazine for tech on occasion, and they do have some very nice people in the club. I did run one track day with them and it was very well run. They weren't as fun as say the Lotus club, but it was worth joining.
