If you look in the classifieds:
1983 X1/9 in Cleveland GA ~$650 (complete w/title)
14" speeline rims 4x98 for Fiat ~$300 Cleveland OH
1.3L Motor ~ FREE Killeen TX
I know the rims might not be much better than stock and you might want to run 4x100 with wobbles to open up Miata style rims but if you were a purist and wanted an el-cheapo resto this would get you started...
Its already got the more powerful 1.5L in it. Add boost and enjoy spitting drivelines and wheel bearings out of it before you lose the transaxle. Though, it might survive long enough for the Challenge.
Biggest issue? You need decent struts to make it handle, those aren't cheap as the Exxie is an odd beast. It can take MK1 Rabbit KYB strut cartridges, but the same Koni's, etc don't fit (plus they aren't cheap) The necessary springs aren't too bad, luckily.
If you have the skills and tools to make your own strut housings to fit more commonly available struts, then you can also likely fix the bolt pattern issue and would more than likely not be using the stock Fiat drivetrain :)
