In the SCCA fastrack today:
Stock
- #6585, Chevrolet Sonic classing. This model does not meet the provisions of Section 3.1 relating to rollover risk, as it does not have a published SSF rating and its average track width is smaller than its overall height.
Ouch. Is it really that different from the Fiesta or Mazda2?
We're getting one as a delivery vehicle at work. Who wants to make bets on its next recall?
Or a Yaris for that matter.
The Solo Board is sooooo out of touch with reality it's not even funny anymore.
Funny, there's currently a Sonic sitting in my driveway. No, I'm not going to try to roll it.
We'll let Brian Deegan take care of rolling it.
Anywho, I'm guessing lawyers are somehow involved in this decision, for example, in the freak occurance a Sonic does go shiny-side down, SCCA doesn't want to be held liable for allowing a car without an SSF rating at an event.

That's OK, I don't like running in stock class anyway...

I believe the club uses the SSF (static stability factor) as a baseline for eligibility. It's not the only standard but probably the most important, at least in the club's eyes.
Since the Sonic doesn't have a rating and other specs make it suspect, classification will have to wait for more information. Yes, lawyers are involved and no, it's not the only vehicle to get ruled out.
There was a recent thread that mentioned the non-SRT-4 Dodge Caliber is also banned from SCCA Solo competition, probably for the same reason. The SRT-4 must have been lowered enough that it barely eked by into the rulebooks.
Banned from stock class only? How likely is it to tip over on oem tires vs. sticky stock class R-compounds?
It's still rallycross legal.
Just out of curiosity, certain BMW's have rolled, or have come VERY close to in the right circumstances. Has any thing been done about those cars?

I was wondering what you did to get banned .

Yeah, those guys suck!
<--- One of those guys.
The Stock Advisory Committee is working on alternatives to the current method of determining classification based on rollover risk, but the reality is that there is a lot of tall and narrow stuff being released these days. Trust me when I say that it was a major gut check to not let the Fiat 500 through.

I have an Idea.. Get rid of R-compound stock tires allowing only ST type tires and rollover risk should go down enough that cars like the Sonic/Fiat 500 would be elligible.
Pours Gasoline.. Lights match.. runs away..

Logic? NO.
Yeah. I always thought R-comps were stupid in a "stock" class.
Meh, the discussion has been made countless times.
I realized i had no dog in this fight because i hate "stock" cars in the first place, so i stopped caring.
Don't like R-Comps in stock classes? Stop racing in stock classes, and eventually the hint will be taken if enough people leave Stock a desolate wasteland.

Don't like R-Comps in stock classes, don't compete on them
You're absulutely right, but I had to make that small FTFY correction anyway.
The answer just isn't that complicated.

About as likely as a turbo Firefly, if not more likely. Ask how I know this :P
So I'm guessing this will be banned too when it hits showrooms this year? It's the Scion iQ. Should find some other kind of competition these things could be in...pinebox derby?

yeah, this. I was hoping for some legen...(wait for it)...
..Dary! story.
In reply to Klayfish:
The iQ is now eligible for the $20.12 Challenge.
One more vote for getting r-comps out of stock class. I've autocrossed for 15 years and would like to see stock have a tire rule like ST, 140 wear or higher. Leave the r-comps for stuff that rolls in on a trailer. Lucky for me the Detroit region has a "street tire" class for each stock class. They have more entries than the regular class.
Who'd want to race a Sonic or IQ anyway?
