A co-worker says his transmission is humming when stopped and in drive. He says it only happens in drive, if he shifts to neutral it goes away. My first thought was the torque converter, but since all things "automatic transmission" are magic question marks to me, I thought I'd ask you guys.
The car in question is a 2002 Outback. Teh googles didn't turn up anything that I thought was of any value.
Thoughts?
Thanks!

My suggestion is to check the level of fluid, it may be low and probably change the fluid and filter if it hasn't been done.
Mounts? He might also just be hearing a PWM solenoid doing it's thing. Pan drop/fluid change is never a bad idea, don't those run spin on filters and have drain plugs, making it really easy?
Yes, fluid and filter change on those is like changing the motor oil. External screw on filter and drain plug on the pan (like they all should be!).
I had one with a bad internal seal once that mixed the front diff & auto trans fluid. That was a recipe for disaster. Take note of the fluid that comes out to make sure it's the correct color. Remember these have separate dip sticks for front diff and auto trans. Change the front diff fluid at the same time. It think the drain plug is a T70 hex bit and its only 1.5 ish quarts of 75w-90. Don't forget the crush washers or you'll have a leaker.
FYI -- They will go a long time making noises. N/A Subie's just don't have much power and the trans usually lasts the life of the car.
I recently bought a '05 Forester that fried its center diff clutch pack so bad, it spewed chunks throughout the entire system. I was still able to drive it enough to pull onto a trailer and take it home.
A used 100,000 mile trans with 1 year warranty was $180, so if a used one has to go in, its not that expensive if he can do it himself.
Awesome! Thanks guys, I'll pass the word.
