Sooooo when did EBAY start charging a fee based on the value of the car???

Has it always been this way??? Are we due for a typical ebay rant? I think so. Geez. What a bunch of clowns. I wasted some time today navigating their crappy site to put my 69 olds up for sale only to figure out afterwards my ad for my $10,000 car was not going to just cost $22 bucks but up to 10% of the selling price with a cap of $750. I don't recall it being this way but its been awhile since I've tried using them. Their site sucks, you can't chat with anyone, you click on the "live help" button and you have to call with questions and the whole thing is not user-friendly in any way. The site mandates that you put in certain pieces of information that didn't exist. Plus a complete rip-off. I'll guess Ill try hemmings. I will light the car on fire and push it over a cliff with a litter of puppies inside before I list it on Ebay.

Yep they have been doing that for awhile now. They do that with ATV's and dirt bikes. Anything with a motor pretty much.

Like it or not, it's the biggest marketplace out there. So if you don't list on eBay, you're potentially missing out on a whole bunch of buyers. A targeted listing like Hemmings is probably a better choice for an oddball car though.

That's how they did it originally and then they switched to a flat fee. I didn't realize that they had switched back.

$22 will get you national exposure. If overpriced and not hitting reserve this will likely still bring you email conversation with potentially genuine buyers.
Or, factor that $750 into your reserve price.

of course a 69 Olds with decent pics might fall into Bring a trailer grade and could get national exposure there

I think several people on here have learned that national exposure on BaT doesn't necessarily translate into a sale...

I'm kinda confused though, the help page (still) lists flat fees for vehicle selling, especially for low volume sellers: http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/motorfees.html

FWIW I sold an enclosed trailer on Ebay Motors last month for $4600 and paid $125 for the listing.

I listed my 73 Cadillac last week. $17 was the total listing fees ($12 of which was the 24-photo package with full size details and zoom). If the high bidder had actually paid, it would have been a flat $125 to eBay, regardless of if it only went for $4000 or you tacked an extra 0 on the end. Where are you getting your prices?!?

I called customer service and the dude from India told me my charge was $22, which of course I was cool with, + ten percent of the sale price, which I optimistically guessed would be $10k. But then he said the max fee would be capped at $750 instead of $1k.

Thanks everyone... I called back today and got patched through to India again. The girl who answered this time tried to tell me again that I would owe 10 percent based on the value of the final sale price of my item. She called up my ad. I specifically asked her if she saw the ad that I was speaking of. "Yes" she said, she was looking right at it. So she again spouted off about this 10% jazz and she tried to direct me somewhere on Ebay where that is stated. Thanks to Boxhead Tim and Javelin I just refused and instead called up the link they provided. And I read it off to her. There was a pause. Then she said. "Oh,, you're trying to sell a car?" Yes!!!!!! Yes!!!!! I am trying to sell a car!!!! On EBAY!!!! You got it!!!! She agreed that there would be only the flat fee. So I relisted it, problem solved. Thanks guys.
