So, as for Tire Rack and other online wheel vendors no longer selling you a wheel unless it's for a specific listed car; the reason is because there are too many wheel buying idiots in the world. They got tired of people finding a wheel they like but utterly failing to select the correct specifications for what will fit on their car. So they have finally taken the "show me all" option away.

What about other sources? I have a desire to get some wheels for either the Galaxie (1965 convertible) or the Ranchero (1978 beast mode) at some point in the nearish future and other than Jegs and similar don't know where to look for classic non-donk or Resto-mod wheels. I would like something in a 17 or 18 that doesn't look ridiculous and doesn't cost $300 a wheel. I am tempted to just get some 17" Soft 8s and call it a day. Hope this isn't too much of a thread jack.
In that price range and diameter, it may be best to track down some take-offs from a late model car with the same bolt pattern. As others have noted, Summit would be the first place I'd look if I were buying new wheels for that sort of car.

There's a company called Flyin' Miata that has a few options :)
I got my beloved set of 15x8 Jongbloeds from you guys. Wish I'd had the foresight to buy a set of 15x10s to squirrel away for the future.
Jongbloed, that burns me up. I'm the one that put them in touch with Bill from FM and never received what I was promised.
I'll never support that company again.

I'm not sure we ever got several tens of thousands of our money back. That was not a happy escapade for anyone involved. At least they were cheap when they showed up because they were so overweight.
If you were promised a set of wheels, drop me a line.
Ouch. I knew there was some issues, but I wasn't aware it was that screwed up. Pity, because they are nice wheels. One of mine got a bad rock chip or something that took a small chunk out of the spokes though, and sourcing a replacement is difficult.
Very screwed up. Like you said, nice enough wheels but they weren't the wheels they were supposed to be.
We've got a few used sets here that we're probably going to sell because it doesn't make sense for us to have wheels on our cars that we can't sell to customers. Drop me a line at keith@flyinmiata.com with the color and I'll see if we have any.

I would like to do that, but that is something that is rare around here. When they do show up, people want full price for their wheels with bald tires...
As op that is my concern too. I'll buy from GRM or a forum but have a serious distrust of buying used wheels from an unknown dude on CL. And deals seem to be too difficult to chase.

For what you describe, get some OEM Miata wheels and call it a day

Might want to try eBay as well. The problem is you need to have which particular wheels you want - or at least a couple specific donor vehicles in mind.
^^^^^This. I've learned to input other vehicles at Tire Rack to get more choices. I'll throw in my MINI or VW GTI and the selections change. It would be nice if you could just input bolt circle and offset to get results.
Good advice, I will try that out.
