I bought a car from a dude in Ohio that has a Texas title.  The Texas title was never signed over to the current owner.

Can I just take the Texas title and get it transferred to south Carolina at the DMV?

I have never done this in this state so I don't know what I need and searching has given vague answers....

Any help is appreciated.

I wouldn't mention at a SC office that you bought the car from an Ohio guy.  Since the Ohio guy never bothered to title the car in Ohio, then according to paper trail, you have bought the car from Texas Guy.  Do you know Texas Guy?

Instead, you bought a car with a Texas Title.  You will now be bound to the rules of Texas.

I dont know know the answer but the question you want to ask is, "what paperwork does Texas require for a sale?"

Tx requires a signed title and a mileage affidavit signed by the previous and new owner.  They also charge sales tax on what the state thinks the car is worth rather than what you paid.

I wasn't gonna mention Ohio guy unless I had to.

In reply to Jason McRoberts :

The TX sales tax should not matter in this case since it is an out-of-state sale.

He will be subject only to the tax of his new state, S. Carolina.

Looks like you need a TX mileage affidavit.

SC just requires the title signed/filled out with buyer info, seller info, and price. Don't mention Ohio...as long as TX owner didn't file for a lost title since he sold it you should be good. If TX owner did that you are in a bind due to not having a valid title.

I honestly just mentioned the sales tax thing because it's a little beef of mine with the republic I love so much.smiley

Strictly speaking, title jumping is most likely against the law in all 50 states.  I'd try to get the guy in Ohio to process the title from Texas before I bought it from him.
