I need a new exhaust for my track/street Miata, or to repair the current busted one. I've got a line on some selling a used MazdaComp Spec Miata exhaust (he seems like a bit of a Craigslist flake though). Any word on how loud this would be for the limited street duty this car sees? The car does still have an intact Cat, so I presume that will help quiet things from SM levels.

Every SM car I've heard puts open-exhaust rotaries to shame. I'd pass.

Is there a decent exhaust shop around you? I have all my exhausts custom-made (it's one of my pet peeves, I really don't like "aftermarket bolt-in" systems). They could probably help you out for much less.

I have a friend who can repair the damage to the current exhaust. It would cost me about the same as buying something used on Craigslist, but he could modify the parts we have to work with.

Put a Supertrapp end on it, it'll be ok. Not fine, but simply ok. Take the supertrapp off, and it'll be cop attracting. I'll see if I can get pics of mine, but it'll be next week, as I'm heading straight from work to Summit Point, and won't be home until late on Sunday.

I have personal experience with this. My car came with a MazdaSpeed Spec Miata exhaust welded to a replacement cat. It was LOUD. I mean really loud. I set off car alarms in the neighborhood when I drove past at 25 mph in fourth gear. I felt like a was trolling for a fix-it ticket.

That exhaust was the absolute first thing I replaced. A friend cut me a deal on a stock system that had been replaced by racing beat parts. It made the car livable without earplugs. I sold it on Craiglist for $60. I wonder if you are seeing an ad the same one.

Uhh, yeah. Another vote for not running a Spec exhaust on the street. Although they can be kinda useful - when I was at Laguna a few weeks back, I was following a Spec racer. Even over the noise of my car and despite my sound-insulated rally helmet, I could tell exactly what he was doing the throttle and when

It's some flake posting that he's parting out a '91 (no further details or pictures). Apparently he has the Spec Miata exhaust, a stock exhaust, and flowmaster that makes room for a spare under the car (which all the reviews I've read of say it actually loses power). He's asking $150, for the Spec exhaust, and I told him that was way too high.

My car currently has a busted 5ZIGEN exhaust, and a buddy is going to give me his discarded stock exhaust. He cut the pipe in one spot to make it easier to remove though.

I'm thinking I'll take the resonator from the stock exhaust (since I doubt my resonator can be repaired) and mix and match a few other pieces from what I'll have.

The Spec Miata Bosal stainless cat-back is only $148 from Mazdaspeed.

I've had mine on two different cars, both of which have seen a bit of street use. With a race pipe in place of the cat, it is painfully loud. I wore earplugs on the street.

But with a stock cat in place, I don't think it's too bad. If your car has a downstream O2 sensor, you will either have to add a sensor bung or clamp the sensor under your car (careful: it's heated and it gets HOT!).

The system is also much lighter that what it replaces.

I have a '94, so only one 02 sensor, pre-cat.

I figured the cat would cut down noise significantly. I'll see if I can talk the guy down in price from.

Here's what the muffler looks like that came on the car: There is a resonator before the muffle (not pictured). I have no idea why it has a muffler and a fart-can.

I don't have a pic of the busted muffler, but the inlet tube got bashed into the muffler, and there is a big hole around it now.
