As the title says the spring compressor i rented from autozone wont fit into the coils of the 280z springs I need to remove. The struts are out of the car.
What should I do?

You want a spring compressor that clamps on the outside of the spring... And you need 2 to compress it.
Take the compressor appart, thread that hooks through the spring, then put the rod back thought the hooks.
Hope this works for you.

I had the same problem with the Racing Beat springs I (temporarily) had on my Miata. I ended up building a redneck contraption using the rear triangle of a cheap mountain bike & some random other bits. The only problem was in order to get enough leverage to have a free hand to thread/unthread the top nut, it left me in a position with the compressed strut assembly pointing up at my chin.

This is what I always have to do, too. If that doesn't work, I believe you might have to go shopping for a compressor with smaller spring hooks. The ones they sell now have a nice price point, but they tend to use cheaper steel, so they have to use more of it. There are better ones around with high grade steel coil hooks that fit in tighter places.
